The president's comments are being read as a signal that he wants to ignore his lawyers and exonerate his former campaign chairman.

Anonymice galore, so i would say first and foremost: caveat emptor, as to: honest opinions or tactical leaks?

Poll: 6 in 10 oppose Manafort pardon ( & only 11% say appropriate)

I recently watched a Sam Harris interview of a legal expert discussing impeachment. He claimed abuse of the presidential power to pardon was a legitimate cause that was extensively discussed as the constitution was being ratified.

With no insider knowledge as a current or former administration official and/or advisor, senior or otherwise, I can state with no reason to do so unequivocally that Trump will pardon Manafort. Maybe not today, likely not until his upcoming trial is concluded*, but yeah, he will eventually. It's not complicated. Trump thinks that Manafort has shown Mafioso-style loyalty that no one else has (and now that Weisselberg has immunity, meaning that he's cooperating, The Don can't trust anybody), so he deserves to be compensated accordingly.
*This part's tricky. Wait for Manafort to give up and possibly flip after his conviction or head it off at the pass and pardon him for everything? Poof! DC trial never happens and Paul walks ...

I just read the Trump tweet thread and WOW like 99% of the replies are really extreme hate Trump tweets. I don't follow twitter except when you link something. Is that normal for a Trump tweet?
by ocean-kat on Sun, 08/26/2018 - 10:35pm
I dunno cause I rarely look at the replies. Actually, I don't really look that much at his tweets directly on principle of not feeding the troll. So only see them when a reporter I follow is quoting one with a comment and there's only a small number of those that interest me.( Tho NYTimes guy Glenn Thrush comments on them a lot, and he's pretty funny and good at it, so I appreciate those to lighten my mood sometimes.)

Michael Maeillo @MichaelMaiello just retweeted this one (by our "TMac"?), he's a sucker for literary references as one might imagine:
We're all addicts to this character, need some kinda 12-step group.

Lookie here, he has finally been forced to back down in face of the bigger alpha, even though a dead one, maybe someone like Melania or Ivanka helped, who knows. It's like he'd doing it with gritted teeth and I just fear this will in the end make him more nuts, though.
"Statement from the President"
Edit to add more forced atonement:

P.S. American Legion chastising the commander in chief, can't go much lower than that. ESPECIALLY IF you're like always trying to make hay off of NFL players supposedly dissing the national anthem. At a certain point going rogue is more like going off a cliff....
Edit to add: more details here:

Daily Beast has a headline story that is making the fair point that he's just not that good dealing with dead people in general. I think they maybe should think again and change it to not being good with anyone that doesn't adore him properly?

The two impulses are not mutually exclusive.
Bigger than any particular personality is the shadow of the Vietnam War. The bitterness felt deeply by those who fought or did not. The bitterness between those who did. The only possible memorial was a list of names of who died.

It's in the shadow ..
It walks behind us, stalking.
It's the personal.
It's not just the bitterness,
It's the belief in the taste.
by barefooted on Mon, 08/27/2018 - 9:16pm
Very personal.
Maybe it is entangled with having graduated from a military academy and then dodging the war but Trump has been consistently hostile to the idea that suffering can be a form of service. The rancor expressed goes beyond having an opinion about it. He sounds like something has been stolen from him and that he will never get it back.

Him & Bruce Willis. Maybe there's at least a rollicking comedy film or thriller at the end of this rainbow? Maybe call it "All That Jizz" - seemed a success in bygone days.

Even Palmer notes this is nonsence - that Putin wouldn't risk the further sanctions that such an act would invite. And frankly (or "Frankenly") speaking, I think Putin digs the kind of bad-boy Russian dirt that Manafort dishes. It's not like Manafort will threaten Russia's money laundering / corporate extortion business - in fact he just makes it look sexy.
