Russia's hosted such meetings in the past, most recently Feb 2019
Russia has long lamented the US' "monopolization" of the peace process & tried to carve out a niche for itself: mediating among the disunited Palestinians/2

A mass expulsion of Afghan migrants could destabilize the region and fuel radicalization. The West should pressure Islamabad to change course.
All eyes on #Chad right now
Chad has two internet trunks coming into the country: One from the Red Sea via Sudan; the other from Cameroon. Not possible for the totality of the country's internet network to be shut unless done centrally. A lot of rumors swirling; few facts. https://t.co/N6bDJZ2ixO

I was in an equally dangerous situation with Pop Corn. Some times some of the kernels didn't pop and got burned. Terrible flavor! Pieces of the corn skin would get stuck in my teeth. It's not just the danger during the original encounter. That skin might be stuck for days afterward and be almost impossible to get out.
eta: All kidding aside. Something like this probably happened but I'd guess it's probably exaggerated. Teens fight. I got into fights in school though none of us carried anything that could be used as a weapon. The question is why is he telling this story?

by artappraiser on Sun, 09/15/2019 - 3:37pm
And this story about Corn Pop is what he came away with? This is the one he wants to tell as emblematic of his experience there?
by ocean-kat on Sun, 09/15/2019 - 3:51pm
I'm confused now. Seems like he did the Corn Pop speech two years ago as in the two year old Delaware article there is a still photo with the same people and background as in the video. But the story doesn't talk about Corn Pop, it talks about how he took a job as a lifeguard there as a youngin in order to get to know black people after seeing MLK on TV, etc. and he was the only white guy....and how they learned about each other, the example quoted there is one of the black lifeguards asked him if he had a 5-gallon gas can he coul borrow as he was going to visit NC and black people couldn't refuel in most gas stations...
so I think somebody posted this older video and it went viral?
If so, it struck me: this is the way it's going to work these days in politics...if it goes viral, it's news! Doesn't matter how old the story it, the pol has to deal with it if it goes viral. Doesn't even have to be "oppo", if someone runs across something from your past, if it resounds, it's news that you ignore at your peril. Is what it is. Makes me think campaign teams really have to be on their toes and know whether something is recent or long ago and hit back with context right away!
by artappraiser on Sun, 09/15/2019 - 7:09pm
They really should tell us if a video is two years old but in any case it's bizarre. What's his message? That he's so tough?
by ocean-kat on Sun, 09/15/2019 - 7:31pm
I don't think this is directly due to his age or mental deterioration. Perhaps due to his age in that he grew up in a different time with different value system that he hasn't fully grown beyond.
But the age issue is coming up more often, and the push back, calling it ageism. I think calling it ageism is ridiculous. Biden is old, so is Sanders. It's one thing when workers in their late 40's or 50's are pushed out of jobs they are quite capable of doing. But there is a significant difference between a 56 year old and a 76 year old.
by ocean-kat on Sun, 09/15/2019 - 9:41pm
You have a great point on the age thing as far as past and present Congressional pols in this age cohort. Here's why: because they are the ones who have ruled when people should be able to retire and get Social Security! According to them, by the age of 67, people in general cannot work as hard or as well as they once did and need supplemental income. So why are they so special? Is it that they know being president isn't as grueling a job as it's cracked up to be? Or what? There's just a non-sequiter here that bothers me: an eighty something president arguing that 70 somethings are elderly disabled, can't work as much as they once did and need more help.Huh?
This is totally apart from my own personal feelings on the matter about aging and feeling some prejudice from it. It's just a matter of logic. And guess what, even though a sixty-something, I still can do logic, hah.
I am beginning to see one argument from the anti-elderly prez side that doesn't make sense either, though: that they will be waay too old, shockingly old, to serve a second term. Who made the new rule that a good prez had to serve a second term? Why can't the person just quit after one term? In this day and age, rotation is probably a good thing.

I think the brain can work pretty well into late years. But even if Biden isn't seeing any mental decline, and I think he is, the physical decline is inevitable. I used to lay down to read a book before bed and if it was really interesting I'd be finishing it when the sun rose the next morning. I can't pull all nighters any more. I thought maybe it was mostly from the health crisis I went through a couple of years ago so I asked a friend in his late 50's. He's leads a very active life style, does through hikes on the sw and pacific trails. He said he used to work all day in the Arizona sun but he can't do it anymore. The heat just sucks the energy out of him.
I just don't see a 76 year old being able to get by without sleep if there's some real crisis and keep his mind clear. I couldn't do it at 62. I need my sleep.
