This is the best report I have found about one incident mentioned in the article that went viral, of the San Francisco women attacked by a mentally ill guy at her apartment house door. It sort of encapsulates the escalation of the situation with a lot of mentally ill among the homeless. It has the full surveillance video of the incident, but it also has the wild-eyed booking shot of the perp and a video interview with the victim describing what happened, step by step. As well as her complaints about how the powers that be, including the police, seem to be on a different plane about the problem as a whole, an alternate reality problem. She is calm and determined, not shrill or hysterical. (Two women handled the guy all alone and lucked out, the police screwed up on rating the importance of the call, but it is clear it could have been much worse)

Edit to add: the interview with her describes a much more tense situation than you see in surveillance, as he was telling the woman outside that he wanted to get in to kill the women inside to save her! So what looks like her help, that woman actually was in a lot of danger if he got through the door....
