Marissa Alexander, an African-American Florida women who suffered abuse at the hands of her husband received a 20-year sentence for firing a warning shot will get a new trial. There was outrage because the judge in the case did not allow Alexander to use the same type of defense used by George Zimmerman trial that included elements of "Stand Your Ground".
Interestingly, the same prosecutor involved in the Zimmerman case was involved in Alexander's trial. Alexander had no prior legal issues and no one was injured in the shooting. An Appeals Court judge ruled that Alexander should have been able to use "Stand Your Ground" as a part of her defense. Hopefully, her sentence will be overturned.
Comments
Alexander fired a warning shot into a wall in 2010 when she felt threatened by her abusive husband.
