NPR is reporting that Congresswoman Giffords has died. I can't even begin to process the degree of tragedy and loss here. Sometimes, you just feel an event, and this saddens me deeply to the core. What thoughts I have are with her family.

This is a horrible punch to the gut. It is obviosuly too soon to make judgments on this, but for the moment the idea that she has been the victim of a political assasination seems quite plausible. If that is so....oh, I cannot finish this thought right now. You know what it is.
I am so sorry for her family, and for us.

I am so saddened by this. For Gabrielle Giffords, whose adult life of good works and intentions is finished. For her family. For her constituents. For the country, as this event highlights: a) the insane bias for Second Amendment "rights" at the expense of a society secure in its individual safety b) the cost -- individually and collectively of Far Right propaganda; and, c) yet another example that a woman's voice for progress is just that pivotal bit less tolerable than a man's. (Although it could be argued, in terms of assasination, that the Congresswoman's killing is an example of "equal opportunity.")
Thank you for posting this in such a timely way, Sleepin'.

Report at link says at least five dead. An 'illegal', an 'anchor baby' or a gun loving right wing psycopath who listens to hate radio and Fox News? I can find no report if the shooter is in custody.
A man who works at Sprint store nearby told CNN he heard 15 to 20 shots, and there are two bodies on the ground in front of the Safeway.

A sad day

Hopeful news that the Congresswoman is not dead, but in surgery. Temporizing spin? Or a reprieve?
by wws on Sat, 01/08/2011 - 3:21pm
As I write, the police have told both NBC/MSNBC and CNN that she is still alive, that the death report is incorrect.. Both channels say a hospital press conference is expected soon.

But an unnamed aide of hers has been reported killed in the shooting.

this NYTimes piece
http://www.nytimes.com/2011/01/09/us/politics/09giffords.html?hp
has one eyewitness account that sounds relatively reliable and detailed (though you never know with these "breaking "things:)
by artappraiser on Sat, 01/08/2011 - 3:37pm
P.S.
Dr. Rayle checks out on google, as to being certified in emergency medicine, in Tucson, on a lot of the doctor sites.
by artappraiser on Sat, 01/08/2011 - 3:42pm
Geez, the Times already changed what they are saying Dr. Rayle said. Here's what they have now:
I'm giving up for now on the "breaking" stuff on what actually happened on this--I should know better,--mho, best to wait for tomorrow's reports giving reporters enough time to confirm and reconfirm, and not feed the "Dewey Defeats Truman" breaking beast. My bad.
by artappraiser on Sat, 01/08/2011 - 4:21pm
Apparently no sense of decorum, or even irony, that commentators are saying that reports of the Congresswoman's death were "jumping the gun."
How pervasive is our cultural militancy? Rhetorical question to which we know the answer.
by wws on Sat, 01/08/2011 - 3:47pm
Richard J. Kastigar, the bureau chief for the Pima County Sheriff's Department, tells CNN that 18 individuals were shot and six are dead. He adds that Giffords is "gravely" wounded.
Via Brian Stelter, state senator Linda Lopez tells Fox, "We just heard that [Giffords] is responding to commands. She made it through surgery."

The judge who was killed at today's shooting has been identified as John Roll.

Hmmm.. I think that's all I will say for now about this report I just ran across:
by artappraiser on Sat, 01/08/2011 - 4:09pm
Giffords shot through and through on side of head
Young child dead.
She is said likely to "recover"

Shooter said to have used automatic weapon.

Going forward: Secret Service for all Fed. Legislators? metal detectors at public events? (previous incident, guy removed from Giffords event when pistol fell out of his pocket!

Freeper site is down--scrubbing in progress?
by jollyroger on Sat, 01/08/2011 - 4:24pm
SarahPac had a fundraising appeal prior to the midterms with rifle sites on various "targeted" representatives, including Giffords.
CNN anchor and Dem (?!) rep from Maine bemoaning the "tough talk on both sides" and assuring everyone that this is a crazy individual of the type no one could predict would be influenced by appeals to the use of "Second amendment remedies."
by brewmn on Sat, 01/08/2011 - 4:33pm
Another suspect has been arrested in connection to the shooting and they are looking for a third. Who knows what the relations were, if any, between these individuals and what role, if any, others played in the shooting. It may be just a "crazy" individual or it could something a little more complex.

The guy had a blog and he was a right wing nut and a paranoid and young and angry.
Just one sad lunatic.
by Richard Day on Sat, 01/08/2011 - 4:57pm
Timothy McVeigh was also a sad lunatic, but he did have "friends" or should I say associates. The question is whether there were others who were actively affirming this guy's paranoia and anger, or worse, assisted him in obtaining the automatic weapon.
by Elusive Trope on Sat, 01/08/2011 - 5:05pm
Sarah Palin's site Takebackthe20.com which had the "targeted" districts has been taken today it appears.

This a tragedy. MSNBC reports the Congresswoman is out of surgery and they are optimistic of her recovery. What kind of recovery is probably anybody's guess.
Five dead.Including a Federal Judge who had received tons of death threats within the last year or so.
A lot of repercussions to all of this. A wall shall be built between our representatives and the citizens.
This of course was a tragedy even without the Congresswoman's involvement.
I'm stunned.

Giffords is blue dog-voted against Pelosi as min. leader.

From Sam Stein at Huffington Post
by Elusive Trope on Sat, 01/08/2011 - 4:57pm
From Jay Bookman, AJC: AP has identified the gunman as Jared Laughner. Someone by that name, identifiying themselves as a resident of Tucson’s Eighth Congressional District, posted this earlier. If this is indeed the shooter, his mental stability may be in question.

Godspeed to all the dead, their families, and the recovering. Imagine surviving a through-and-through brain shot. Astounding.
The pity is that media coverage will travel the same routes as always in these slaughters, family and friends interviewed, law enforcement pronouncements, blame here and there, shrinks weighing in, the NRA screaming about People Killing People...and we'll be no closer to preventing atrocities like this in the future...
Some dude wrote a column already on Huffpo; I saw the sentence "words have consequences', assumedly thinking or knowing someone ginned this Loughner up. But why can't we say, "So do guns have consequences" and have it change something?
You know how many states now permit open-carry, even in churches and bars? And how many county sheriffs give any white person who asks a conceal permit? Some of my neighbors sleep with loaded guns under their pillows; what on earth could ever act to neutralize the fear of each other that's so endemic in this country? Or that shooting each other helps solve anything?
The rest of the world watches us with incredulity and empathy, and maybe a bit of mockery. We are nuts.
Sorry; I'm sad, but I'm also pissed.

I feel like that the antigun movement is dead.
But this entire tragedy makes me weep.
Damn. Recall the fellows carrying guns a couple blocks from where Obama was making an appearance.
The like so many have pointed out, radio heads calling for violence, Palin with her 'crosshairs' ad...
Not a lot of good here except for the response from members of Congress, etc.
The lone nut can just pull out a gun, an automatic and shoot scores of times before anyone could possibly subdue him.
Not much different than a suicide bomber.
They are all terrrorists. People die for no reason.
by Richard Day on Sat, 01/08/2011 - 6:46pm
And people kill for no reason. At least rational ones. Like killing someone who 'disrespected' you. I've been thinking about Columbine, and maybe because I live in Colorado, the debates and hangwringing and parental blame went on for freaking ever. Hanging in the background always was that these kids were bullied. Oh, the scbools would finally have anti-bullying programs (they didn't). but they did seize kids' computers wholesale for a couple years to make sure they didn't have a Harris or Klebold in their midst, so more kids became enraged over being targeted. That was 1999; our schools just last year got a program going (I'd worked for years for one).
I've been considering writing about the language of violence in this country. I may do it. God help us all, Dick. "If the bad guys don't get ya, the good guys will."--Buffy Sainte Marie.
by we are stardust on Sat, 01/08/2011 - 7:09pm
The problem is that person who kills for what you consider non-rational reason believes it to be a rational one. The kids at Columbine, regardless of the reason(s) that drove to that point, believed what they were doing was a rational extension of their experiences. There's a reason why the German nation hasn't been able to fully wrap their minds around how the holocaust happened. The excuse that this person or society just went momentarily crazy doesn't cut it.
The one thing I would offer if you were to write on violence is according to Richard Leakey, the first archeological evidence of murder occurs after we have language. Which is one of saying that the atrocities we see committed by humans is a consequence of being caught in the prisonhouse of language, always once removed from the world, where concepts like honor and truth are as real as the breeze moving throught the leaves of the trees.
by Elusive Trope on Sat, 01/08/2011 - 7:30pm
I get into that conumdrum all the time.
I mean what is rationality.
Government gives up on this problem.
I mean you have to stop the chaos.
It is like someone who feels God is telling him to kill Beck.
You must stop him from killing beckerhead, whether or not the guy hears the voice.
Then you deal with the issue later.
Like this bastard who is back in Iraq after hiding out in Iran.
He is sure he is right.
And he will work to kill our soldiers.
Because he is right.
And we kill other soldiers because we are right.
It does not mean there is no right or wrong.
The mental processes that caused this animal to shoot 20 people and kill five or six is irrelevant really.
Oh I am rambling.
Good points.
by Richard Day on Sat, 01/08/2011 - 8:43pm
No, Trope; I hadn't thought to intellectualize it, but give current examples of how violent language has become acceptable, even to our public officials.
