This was published in January's issue of Scientific America this year. It covers and explains atmospheric rivers. This was first noticed and studied in 1998. One caused the great flood of 1861 in California and this happens out there about every 200 years. Currently we have an atmospheric river flowing up the East Coast from the Equator dumping rain for the next few days. I hope you take time to read this article in pdf format. It is good information to know and understand about our changing weather.

An interesting analysis and scientifically valuable, but I'd definitely be cautious about putting too much emphasis on this in the mainstream media. It seems to me that the predictions made in the study are based on tertiary effects and those can be very difficult to model. Other secondary or tertiary effects that they neglected to model (possibly because scientists are not yet aware of them) could make the results better — or worse. Still, it provides an example of the types of things that can be caused by mucking with the climate.
