[CRIME News] Shocking daylight robbery caught on video in Bucktown

[....] Robberies have skyrocketed in the police district that serves Bucktown this year. They’re up 53% compared to 2022 and up 96% compared to 2019. That’s as of last Sunday, the most recent data available from the Chicago Police Department.

The robbery occurred in the 32nd Ward, which is represented by Ald. Scott Waguespack.

In a recent community meeting, Waguespack seemed unimpressed with Mayor Brandon Johnson’s awareness of the neighborhood’s robbery problem.

“I don’t think he understood the extent of the crimes taking place over the summer,” Waguespack said, according to Block Club Chicago. Johnson “has no comprehension of what’s happening here. He had no comprehension and he had no answers.”[....]

Three South Carolina teenagers fatally shot three classmates and injured another on Sunday when they opened fire outside an abandoned house over a “stupid” years-long feud, police said.

Jahkeem Griffin and Karlos Gibson, both 17, and an unnamed 14-year-old boy all face charges of murder, attempted murder, and other crimes for unleashing the violence, according to the Richland County Sheriff’s Office.

“Over something stupid. Over something that happened a couple of years ago. A beef that just continues to grow and then young people decide that they’re going to solve it by shooting,” Sheriff Leon Lott said at a press conference.

“You have three teens who will never see adulthood. This is because of what? A disagreement? ‘I don’t like you, you did something to me, so I’m gonna pay you back, so I’m gonna kill you’?”

The three teens allegedly opened fire on their victims while they were sitting in front of an abandoned home in Columbia, the state capital, just after 2 p.m., police said.

The gunmen charged after the teenagers when they tried to retreat into the backyard before fleeing.

No homicides have been reported in Brownsville’s 73rd Precinct in six weeks. And no shootings had been reported there during the same period — a streak that police say lasted until early Friday, when two men and a woman were wounded by gunfire in a corner of the precinct in Crown Heights.

Cops credit Brownsville’s drop in crime to a new “zone strategy” in which NYPD brass identify violent flashpoints in the city and flood those areas with police officers, bringing down acts of violence.

The influx of officers patrol the area, deter crime and take swift action of quality of life offenses they see on the street, cops said.

“It’s good. The more cops, the better. They slow down things,” said Lisa Sam, who owns a salon and braids hair on Rockaway Ave. and has lived in the neighborhood for decades.

Officers are hammering the community with quality-of-life summonses, residents say. Cops in the 73rd Precinct handed out 3,740 criminal court summonses in the first nine months of 2023 — four times more than they gave out in the same period of 2022, when they wrote 883 summonses, NYPD statistics show.

During the same period, cops have seen a 60% drop in homicides in Brownsville in 2023. In the first nine months of 2022, police counted 15 homicides in Brownsville; so far this year, there have been just six.

The number of shooting victims in the neighborhood has fallen by half — from 67 shootings in the first nine months of 2022 to just 32 in the same period of 2023.

Overall crime in the neighborhood has dropped by 15%. Cops in Brownsville have seen a reduction in every crime category this year, with the exception of rape, which as of Oct. 1 was up by jumped by 12%, from 25 cases in the first nine months of 2022 to 28 in the same period of 2023.

Data shows that many Brownsville residents are frustrated with police aggression.

So far in this year, 133 complaints have been filed with the city’s Civilian Complaint Review Board against cops patrolling the 73rd Precinct. By comparison, the 75th Precinct, which patrols an area three times the size of Brownsville had 153 CCRB complaints filed against its officers.

But many neighborhood residents see the results of the police efforts.

Nine people were shot, one fatally, at a community center in White Township, Indiana County, early Sunday morning, in what Pennsylvania State Police are describing as a mass shooting.

According to state police, the shooting happened around 12:35 a.m. at the Chevy Chase Community Center. The center lies about two miles northeast of the center of Indiana University of Pennsylvania's campus.'

The coroner's office said Jamar Montae Porterfield Herriot Jr., 22, of Homestead, Allegheny County, died at the scene.

The eight injured people are all between the ages of 18 and 23, state police said. Five are men, and three are women. One victim is from Chicago; another victim is from Florida. All remaining victims are from Pennsylvania, with exact hometowns unconfirmed [....]

At least four people fired nearly 50 rounds in what Madison police are describing as an “indiscriminate” attack Tuesday night that killed a 15-year-old girl and wounded three other teens at a troubled Far East Side apartment complex.

The shootings happened shortly before 8:30 p.m. at the Harmony at Grandview Commons at 116 Milky Way, off the 5900 block of Milwaukee Street. It’s the second fatal shooting since July at the complex that Madison Police Chief Shon Barnes said has seen 136 calls to police since that time.

The victims of Tuesday’s shooting have not yet been identified, but the girl killed was a sophomore at East High School, according to the Madison School District.

“Surveillance videos showed a car pulled up to the apartment complex,” Barnes said during a press conference Wednesday. “Four people immediately get out of the car and begin indiscriminately firing round after round, not caring for who or what they may strike.”

The three 14-year-olds injured in the shooting, also students in the Madison School District, include two boys who showed up at the hospital with gunshot wounds. One was treated and released, according to Barnes, and one was still at the hospital in serious but stable condition. A 14-year-girl suffered a bullet graze wound.

Barnes said no suspects have been identified in the shooting that hit multiple homes in the area, including two occupied at the time by families with children. He said all the victims either lived in the Harmony complex or nearby, but police had no information that they had been targeted in the attack or what the shooters’ motive might have been, including whether it was connected to any past violence at the apartment complex.

He urged members of the public with any information to contact Crime Stoppers at 608-266-6014 or P3Tips.com, and urged any youth with information about the incident to talk to an adult they trust.

‘This child is dying’

One resident of the apartment complex and another who has a relative living there, but who declined to provide their names, on Wednesday morning said the teens killed and injured were residents of the complex and were shot at from a vehicle that came in through one of the complex’s internal driveways and then drove away.

One of them captured video of the aftermath of the shooting that showed police trying to save the life of the 15-year-old girl.

In the video the man narrates: “I was outside on my porch and a car pulled up and shot a little girl and three boys, they shot at them and the little girl she’s laying there dying. ... Oh my God, this child is dying.”

The man said he lay down on his balcony when the shooting started, and “at least 30 shots was fired.” He didn’t want to be identified because he was concerned about retaliation against his family.

The other resident, a woman who said she moved there in May, said the complex was quiet before the shooting. Police remained on the scene until 4 or 5 a.m. Wednesday, she said.

Barnes said the Harmony has been “a priority location” for police, which runs weekly programs there and holds monthly meetings with residents and city officials, among other efforts.

But the residents the Wisconsin State Journal spoke with Wednesday morning said criminal activity by adults and youth at the complex is far too common.

“They steal cars, they break into people’s property,” the woman said.

In the schools

Interim schools Superintendent Lisa Kvistad on Wednesday called the shooting an “isolated situation,” and while the district had no information about any threats of violence at its schools, “We know that when violence and challenges happen in a community, the impacts carry over into our schools.”

Police said they were providing extra patrols around East and La Follette high schools and Whitehorse Middle School — all on the city’s East Side. In a note to parents Wednesday, La Follette principal Mat Thompson said students there were among those injured.

In an email to East High families Wednesday morning, East principal Mikki Smith said the killing “impacts our entire community and stirs a range of emotions, from fear and confusion, to grief and anger.”

She said support staff would be available in the school’s Career Center to provide emotional support to students who need it and that “it is essential that we come together to support one another and work toward breaking the cycle of violence.”

“Today and always, we remain committed to providing a safe and supportive environment for all of our students and staff,” Kvistad said in a statement. “There are no words to describe the immense impact of this tragedy, however, (the school district) is a united community and we will process this together.”

Past problems

A dispute between two groups of males on July 13 left a 20-year-old man dead after some 60 shots were fired in the same driveway at the complex from which witnesses said the shooters fired on Tuesday.

That earlier shooting had been “targeted,” Barnes said at the time, and stemmed from an “interpersonal conflict.” Two men have since been charged with first-degree intentional homicide, first-degree reckless endangerment and possession of a firearm by a felon in the shooting, and one suspect remains at large.

Last month, police also responded to a shooting at the Harmony after which 17 shell casing were recovered, Barnes said Wednesday, and while “our department has been consistent in what we have done in that apartment complex since 2021,” police do not “always get the response that we want from Royal Capital,” the complex’s owner.

The Harmony is managed by Madison-based Horizon property management and owned by Royal Capital of Milwaukee. A regional manager with Horizon, Terri Pearce, declined to comment on the shooting but said the company was working with police. Royal Capital did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Barnes said some meetings and programs at the Harmony have been canceled because of a lack of support from its managers. The department has also shared with them suggestions for improving lighting and video surveillance, and how to structure the parking lot to discourage crime.

There have been 1,387 calls for police service at the complex since the start of 2020, according to police data.

Troubled area

The city of Madison declared the Harmony, a 94-unit low-income housing complex, a chronic nuisance in 2020, only a year after it opened. It had been plagued by complaints about noise, disturbances and occasional violence almost since its opening in March 2019. But that declaration was vacated in 2021 after owners made changes to improve conditions there.

City officials said Wednesday they were taking steps to again force Royal Capital to make changes at the property to improve safety there.

“We have had quite a bit of concern about this area for some time,” said Aurielle Smith, director of policy, planning and evaluation for Public Health Madison and Dane County, which has taken a lead role in local anti-violence efforts including at the Harmony since the July homicide.

The agency is also actively working with residents at the nearby Meadowlands Apartments, 6834 Milwaukee St., which has also been named as a chronic nuisance.

Tuesday’s homicide was the 10th in Madison this year, equaling the record of 10 set in 2020 and again in 2021.

MPD: 4 injured in downtown Minneapolis drive-by shooting

MINNEAPOLIS — Police in Minneapolis are investigating a downtown shooting overnight that injured four people.

According to police, the shooting was reported at 12:11 a.m. near the 400 block of Third Avenue North. Police say preliminary reports determined two male victims and two female victims suffered non-life threatening gunshot wounds in the incident, which happened outside a music venue.

Police say the shots came from a vehicle.

Three of the victims were taken to Hennepin Healthcare by ambulance while another male victim took himself to Hennepin Healthcare.

No arrests have been announced and the investigation continues.

Three people were killed and three others were wounded as gunfire erupted at a party in Denver, authorities said.

Police were called to an "industrial storefront" on East 39th Avenue around 1:37 a.m. Saturday for reports of a shooting. One person was found dead from apparent gunshot wounds, Denver police said in a statement.

Five other shooting victims took themselves to hospitals. Two of them died, and the others are expected to survive, police said.

A motive remains unclear. Authorities said preliminary information indicates a party was occurring when "shots were fired from at least two firearms."

As of Saturday afternoon, no arrests had been made.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Five people were injured in a shooting that unfolded near an elementary school in east Kansas City, Missouri, on Friday, police said.

Officers responded to the shooting about 4:30 p.m. near east 10th Street and Indiana Avenue.

Two victims at the scene were transported to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Three other victims arrived in a private vehicle at a separate hospital with gunshot wounds. They also suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

The shooting happened just a few feet away from Whittier Elementary School, though school was already released for the day.

LAPD search for multiple gunmen after 3 people killed in Toluca Lake drive-by shooting (North Hollywood)

Los Angeles police are searching for the group of gunmen that shot three people to death and wounded another in Toluca Lake.

Authorities said the shooting happened Monday night just before 9:30 p.m. outside Ernie's Restaurant at the corner of Lankershim Boulevard and Moorpark Street.

A silver sedan with three or four people dressed in black clothing drove up to the victims' car, a black sedan, and fired several shots at them before speeding away south on Lankershim Boulevard, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

One person was pronounced dead at the scene, the other two were able to drive to a nearby hospital where they later died.

The sole survivor, a man in his mid-20s, remains hospitalized. He is expected to recover from his wounds.

Officers have not located the three to four suspects who opened fire on the victims.

It's unclear what prompted the shooting.

2 shot and killed on South Central Avenue in Lodi, suspect at large

LODI — A gunman remains at large after two people were shot and killed in Lodi, police said Monday night.

It happened shortly after 6:30 p.m. along the 11 block of South Central Avenue.

Officers located two gunshot victims inside a home there. The San Joaquin County medical examiner identified both victims Tuesday as 36-year-old Silverio Cazares Gayosso and 49-year-old Fernando Rodriguez, both of Lodi.

One of the two was pronounced dead at the scene, the Lodi Police Department said, while the other person died later at an area hospital.

Investigators said the suspect was able to flee the home before law enforcement arrived. There was no suspect description available.

Additionally, investigators said they believe the shootings were a targeted attack with no active threat to the public.

Anyone who may have information relevant to the investigation is asked to contact the Lodi Police Department.

MIAMI — Gov. Ron DeSantis offered state resources to local police officers following a shooting in Tampa Saturday night that left two dead and almost 20 people wounded.

The Tampa shooting, which sparked criticism from state Democrats over Florida’s less-restrictive gun laws, comes just days after a 40-year-old gunman killed 18 people in Lewiston, Maine, in the deadliest mass shooting in the U.S. in 2023.

Authorities said a feud between two groups escalated Saturday night into a shooting in the Ybor City area of Tampa, which is a hub for Halloween festivities. The assailants opened fire right as crowds of people had poured into the streets from bars and clubs that had just closed for the night, Tampa Police Chief Lee Bercaw said during a Sunday morning press conference. Two died and 18 were injured, though some of the injuries may have been caused by stampeding when people fled, Bercaw said. A local news station reported that a 14-year-old boy was among those killed.

In the aftermath of the Maine shooting, DeSantis, who is running for president, said more people with serious mental health issues should be institutionalized against their will as a way to prevent mass shootings. Police discovered the gunman dead on Saturday, and numerous news reports say that he had been hearing voices and was institutionalized this summer.

“I do think that we tend to pass the buck with some of these people and just kind of hope that they don’t do anything wrong when there’s a lot of signs,” DeSantis said Sunday on NBC’s “Meet the Press.” “I would be more aggressive on some of those fringe people who clearly are demonstrating signs that they’re a major danger to society.”

As governor, DeSantis has generally opposed proposals seeking to restrict access to guns. Last year, he signed into law legislation allowing people in Florida to carry guns without a permit.

Top Democrats in the state blamed too-permissive firearms laws in Florida for Saturday’s shooting. “Bad decisions made in a split second and the proliferation of readily available guns are responsible for these almost daily incidents,” Tampa’s Democratic Mayor, Jane Castor, said on X. “We can affect one half of this equation.”

Florida Democratic Party Chair Nikki Fried called on Congress to pass “responsible gun laws” and Florida Rep. Lindsay Cross (D-St. Petersburg) said, “We need to stop tolerating violence like this.” [....]

4 shot, 2 critically wounded after uninvited guest opens fire at birthday party; suspect at large

WILSON, N.C. (WTVD) -- Officers with the Wilson Police Department (WPD) said four people were wounded by gunfire during a birthday party at the fairgrounds. Two of the four are in critical condition, WPD said in a news release.

The police department said officers were dispatched around 12:20 a.m. Sunday on a shots fired call at the Wilson County Fairgrounds.

Officers located three victims who had been struck by the gunfire. Witnesses to the shooting told investigators they were celebrating a birthday when Braulio Fuentes-Martinez, 18, who was not invited showed up

According to witnesses Fuentes-Martinez was asked to leave several times but refused. They said he went to his car and came back with a firearm and fired about four to five shots into the crowd.

The bullets hit four people and two of them were juveniles. After shooting into the crowd, Fuentes-Martinez hit someone with his car when he tried to leave the scene. He then collided with three vehicles, disabling his, and took off on foot, according to a news release from Wilson PD.

Three of the victims were taken to the Wilson Medical Center and ECU Health Medical Center. One was taken to the hospital.

Police said two victims are in critical condition and two were treated and released. The person struck by Fuentes-Martinez's vehicle sustained minor injuries, WPD said.

Warrants were obtained on Fuentes-Martinez for several counts of attempted first-degree murder. The investigation is ongoing and investigators said additional charges are pending.

He has not been arrested as of Monday night.

ABC11 News reached out to Nash County Public Schools and learned Fuentes-Martinez is a student a Southern Nash High School.[....]

BRONX, New York (WABC) -- Two men are being held on $40,000 cash bail for allegedly assaulting a uniformed NYPD lieutenant as he was responding to a fight at a Bronx subway station.

According to police, Lt. Gypsy Pichardo, a 16-year veteran of the NYPD, was slashed with a boxcutter and suffered injuries that required eight stitches to his swollen left eye.

Marquise Webb and Brian Innocent, both 24 years old, have been charged in connection with the alleged attack.

On Saturday, Webb and Innocent were allegedly involved in a knife fight between two groups when police responded to 238th Street station around 9:45 p.m., police say.

Video obtained by Eyewitness News shows Pichardo entrapped within the group of men as they fight, and that is when police say he was slashed.

According to police, Webb and Innocent punched Lt. Pichardo in the face and head before fleeing. Pichardo then chased after them, and the two were caught by a group of officers including Pichardo.

The complaint filed says Webb and Innocent "refused several commands to place their hands behind their backs."

Lt. Pichardo was transported to a local hospital for treatment.

Webb, from Yonkers, and Innocent, from New Rochelle, were charged with assault, resisting arrest, harassment and obstructing governmental administration.

Innocent was also charged with criminal possession of a weapon when police say they recovered a knife, a box cutter and a straight razor at the scene.

Both men were arraigned Sunday night in Bronx Criminal Court and pleaded not guilty to all charges.

Detectives are still looking for the other members of the group who allegedly fled the scene.

11/20/23 at 02:24 - 8xx University Ave SE - three suspects entered building and smoked narcotics in stairway (#1 BM, dark hat, red puffer jacket, black pants, black shoes, #2 BM red jacket with white cuffs, white hoodie, gray sweatpants, puma sliders with gray socks, #3 BM black puffer jacket, brown hoodie, black pants, white shoes). Two suspects left just before police arrived and third suspect fled when police arrived.

11/20/23 at 02:51 - 7xx 5th Street SE - (while talking to officers from the previous call) - two suspects in dark clothing, unconfirmed race, all dark clothes and riding bicycles. Checking door handles and peering into vehicles. Made entry into one vehicle and removed a white parcel from the trunk. Police arrived as suspects were leaving and gave chase. One suspect got away and one suspect was detained. Sounds like this suspect fell from his bicycle during the chase and sustained minor injuries. Suspect was uncooperative and gave fake name to police. At this time (40 minutes later) officers are still trying to determine who he is. Supervisor called due to suspect injuries and unconfirmed ID. Detained suspect identified as BM wearing all dark clothing and riding bicycle matching surveillance video.

Update: Lorain man fatally shoots wife, 4-month-old son, 9-year-old daughter before killing self, police say

The Lorain Police Department held a news conference Monday afternoon to go over its preliminary investigationinto the deaths of a man and woman and two children found deceased in a home on Sunday.

According to authorities, the bodies of Tyler Young, 29; Skylar Young, 24; 9-year-old Angel Issac; and 4-month-old Bandin Young were found by officers Sunday around 10 a.m. when they responded to an apartment in the 100 block of East 9th Street after getting a call about loose dogs at the home.

The preliminary investigation indicates that Tyler Young shot and killed his wife, biological son and stepdaughter with a handgun and then turned the weapon on himself. The shooting appears to have happened sometime after 1 a.m. Sunday.

In May, Tyler Young was arrested for domestic violence, and his case was presented to a Lorain County grand jury. The jury issued a "no bill" in the case and chose not to indict. Police said the jury's decision came after his wife recanted some of her testimony.

Authorities haven't released any additional information. The case remains under investigation.

Custer County triple homicide suspect in custody

The suspect in the Custer County, Colorado triple homicide has been arrested by New Mexico State Police after a 25-hour manhunt, officials said Tuesday afternoon.

Three people are dead and another has been critically injured after a shooting Monday afternoon near the town of Westcliffe over a property dispute.

In a news conference Tuesday afternoon, Custer County Sheriff Rich Smith said Clark was captured just after 2:45 p.m. He was taken into custody without incident and no one was injured during the course of the arrest, Smith said.

Clark's girlfriend was in Clark's truck with him earlier in the day Tuesday. They were stopped in New Mexico by a task force of state and federal law enforcement officers.

Around 2:30 p.m. Monday afternoon, Custer County law enforcement issued a shelter-in-place order for the Rocky Ridge Road area in the northern part of Custer County, northeast of Westcliffe. It has since been lifted.

"This is a quiet, peaceful town, nothing like this has ever happened," said Rich Smith, Custer County Sheriff.

The suspect was identified by law enforcement as 45-year-old Hanme Clark. He was believed to be driving a white Dodge truck, license plate BHLK27. The suspect and at least one of the victims were known to be in previous civil disputes over property lines and easements.

Law enforcement officials identified the victims as Rob Geers, 63, Beth Wade, 73, and James Daulton. Patty Daulton was injured in the shooting and is recovering, Smith said.

The Geers were Clark's neighbors, Smith said. Other details of the property dispute law enforcement officials alluded to were not immediately available.

Custer County is about 150 miles south of Denver.

Officers say they discovered that Clark's truck had entered the parking lot of the Walmart in Salida and an occupant of the truck went inside and purchased several items. They then left the store and the truck went toward the Methodist Mountain residential area.

Clark also appears to be an accomplished mixed martial arts fighter in Colorado. A post from Pancrase MMA in Denver lists one of their fighters as Hanme Clark who uses the nickname "The Ruiner." They list him as being 6'3" and 185 pounds with a purple belt ll in Pancrase Mixed Martial Arts, black belt lll in Taekwondo and experience fighting in Kendo, a Japanese sword-fighting style. He also has several titles through Pancrase.

The organization also lists a news item on its website that reads, "Former Pancrase Student and Colorado MMA Fighter Wanted for Shooting 4," which links to a Daily Mail story about Clark being sought by police.

Court records show a man with the same name as Clark is a plaintiff in a property dispute in Custer County civil court. That case dates back to 2020 and is still open.

None of the victims in Monday's shooting were named in that lawsuit and it wasn't immediately clear if or how they were connected.

[....] Why has the issue nonetheless received so much attention? Today’s newsletter tries to answer that question while taking a deeper look at recent shoplifting trends.

The data

The various sources of crime data — from government agencies and private groups — tell a consistent story. Retail theft has not spiked nationwide in the past several years. If anything, it appears less common in most of the country than it was before the pandemic.

The most up-to-date source is the shoplifting report published this month by the Council on Criminal Justice, which uses police data through the first half of 2023. The other sources go through only 2022.

The council tracks 24 major U.S. cities. Overall, shoplifting incidents were 16 percent higher in the first half of 2023 than the first half of 2019. When New York City is excluded, however, reported shoplifting incidents fell over the same time period. Out of the 24 cities, 17 reported decreases in shoplifting.

The shoplifting problem “is being talked about as if it’s much more widespread than it probably is,” said Sonia Lapinsky, a retail expert at the consulting firm AlixPartners.

Other data also indicates that shoplifting is not up in most cities since 2019. Retailers’ preferred measure, called shrink, tracks lost inventory, including from theft. Average annual shrink made up 1.57 percent of retail sales in 2022, up slightly from 2021 (1.44 percent) but down compared with 2019 (1.62 percent). The F.B.I. and the Bureau of Justice Statistics also found that theft and property crime ticked up in 2022 but remained below pre-Covid levels.

The notion that the U.S. is enduring a period of higher crime in some areas is not wrong. Car thefts are up by more than 100 percent since 2019. Murders are on track to be 10 percent higher this year than they were in 2019.

Many major downtown areas have also become emptier and more chaotic since the pandemic, which may explain why drugstores and other retailers are more often locking up items even if shoplifting isn’t much more common than in the past.

BALTIMORE -- A Baltimore man pleaded guilty on Wednesday to robbing three banks while serving a sentence for robbing a bank, according to the Maryland U.S. Attorney's Office.

Kevin Lawson, 55, was serving out the remainder of a federal sentence for a 2004 conviction of robbing a bank in a residential re-entry program when he committed the robberies, state authorities said.

Lawson allegedly committed three armed bank robberies in Baltimore between June 6, 2022, and July 18, 2022. He used a black air gun in each robbery, according to his guilty plea.

He showed up at each robbery site wearing a surgical mask and gloves. He typically approached a bank employee seated at a desk on the banking floor and showed them what appeared to be a semiautomatic gun before ordering that person go to the teller line, state authorities said.

Lawson would then hold the bank employee against the glass and demand money from the teller. After receiving the money, Lawson on at least two occasions put the money in a brown paper bag and then put the brown bag inside a white plastic bag before running away, according to state authorities.

In his plea agreement, Lawson said he robbed a bank in the 100 block of East Baltimore Street on June 6, 2022, and a bank in the 5400 block of Harford Road on June 27, 2022, state authorities said.

The third bank was in the 3200 block of West North Avenue. On that occasion, Lawson allegedly rushed a security guard and struck her with his weapon, hitting her head and other parts of her body, according to state authorities.

He attempted to disarm the security guard, too, but tellers, fearing for her safety, used cash to lure him away from her. That's when the security guard shot at Lawson before her weapon jammed, state authorities said.

That day, Lawson fled in a gray Kia. He eventually crashed that vehicle into the exterior wall of a vacant rowhome, according to state authorities [....]

A 5-year-old boy and his mother were found fatally stabbed in their Bronx apartment on Sunday, and the boy’s father was found stabbed to death in the hallway.

All three members of the family — Jonathan Rivera, 38; his partner, Hanoi Peralta, 33; and their son, Kayden — were pronounced dead early Sunday morning in the building on 136th Street near Cypress Avenue in Mott Haven, the police said. Their deaths have been ruled homicides.

Authorities have not released the name of the suspect in the case, but officers are questioning a close relative, according to a police official familiar with the investigation.

On Monday, Mr. Rivera’s father, Miguel Angel Rivera, 60, stood outside his son’s building. He rested his head on a news van and began to sob. “I want to see you, I want to see you,” he said, crying [...]
