^ Is devastating for NYC's economic revival as the economy relies on Manhattan tourism and Manhattan office workers who commute from elsewhere. Is also devastating to NYC going more green. We are back to the 1970's and early 1980's where only people who have no alternative take the subway and tourists are limited to people who like "slumming." Lots more people these days in the greater NYC area can do a lot of work from home with infrequent trips to the Manhattan for which they will use automobiles and not the subway. It may even effect income from the commuter income tax...office towers will continue to suffer high vacancy...the business workers fed the lunch industry, that will continue to die...the beneficiaries will be Uber/Lyft, the parking industry...traffic will be horrendous, though, which ups the prices of traveling by car...

major subway shooting update:
Suspect Description: Man Who Rented U-Haul Linked to Brooklyn Subway Attack Identified: Sources
The suspected gunman, not yet in police custody, wore a gas mask and orange construction vest, sources told NBC New York; law enforcement was searching a U-Haul van with Arizona license plates that may be linked to shooter
By Jonathan Dienst and Myles Miller • Published April 12, 2022 • Updated 3 mins ago
that link had a live video police press conference available just now, I listened to it, just ended.
very interesting clears up confusion about the rental van and the renter who they have a name for; they found the key to the van left by the shooter, they are not sure this "Frank James" who rented the van is involved, addresses in Philadelphia & Wisconsin, but they already know that James has posted on social media anti-mayor-adams and complaints about homelessness, so security is being stepped up for the mayor
the press conference included a major statement by video by Mayor Adams who made it a general speech on gun violence in this country, how we should not accept it, how action must be taken now to crack down and how he vows that even if no one else goes along with it, he vows NYC will not tolerate it any more. Sounded extremely determined that he was going to make NYC a safe haven from gun violence, like it's his reason to be.
the police have posted photos of the renter of the van, they call him a "person of interest".
they have a huge team working on this, plus lots of help from Feds, over 100 detectives alone pouring over videos from the public.
the conference was all no spin and no excuses for error, they took questions and cleared up any confusion, and answered like the reason the video was not working in the station -- they are investigating why - no excuses tolerated- and question about police in the system - it is not true that police are assigned to every station, they don't have the manpower for that, teams roam sections of the system without announcing where they will be...

Charged federally as a terrorist!!!
It may be the first legal case of Black Nationalist terrorism. I bounced around a bit looking at his YouTube videos and comments on them and while somewhat loony and garbled in their thinking, and he's clearly a loner, there seemed to be an overall theme for him of race along the lines of Farrakhan etc. I saw one black person label him as a "hotep", that seemed to be the most accurate description, especially as he was fairly sexist too. To be clear: definitely not religious.
Myself, I actually prefer that prosecutors use the simple definition of "terrorism." What does it matter if it's under an organized movement or not if the intent is to terrorize a whole population? That's "terrorism". It's simple, actually - an act meant to terrorize a whole population for whatever reason. Not a ideological movement or revolution or war, go elsewhere, other charges, to fight that kind of thing legally

Yes, black people have rights, both to not have cops treat them like dogsshit 2nd-class citizens just because they're behind a wheel (or in a car), or "walking while black". Just like black people have a duty to help tone down communities of murderous rage. And policing has a responsibility to respect it's law-abiding citizens even if handling fraught, crime-filled neighborhoods - to give that up is both to escalate the street tensions and simply penalize many innocent victims on the path to pretending to clean things up. (Examples of Baltimore and Chicago where decades of "tough love" experiments lead nowhere but bad). So i have hopes for Eric Adams, respect that there are tough measures & difficult choices, but acting like the average citizen is just whiny for not wanting police state conditions and the aggressive treatment, especially those overtly biased towards their skin color, is not a fair expectation or approach.
by PeraclesPlease on Tue, 04/12/2022 - 6:18pm
such a good point that it also deserves to be on this thread:
this is also why police, even Black police, tend to profile by race
Also, it's clear to me after reading crime news intensely over a long period of time: a lot of prosecutors in blue cities are a major part of the rising crime problem right now, a lot of violent crime is recidivism by Black males being let out on the streets when they have already been arrested for violent crime.
If rehabilitation of violent criminals is a goal, one thing is clear: it's not happening by letting them out on the streets.
It may indeed be more of a funding/staffing problem about prosecutors rather than ideological reasons for lax prosecution; that I don't know for sure.

24 hrs. ago there was a lot of buzz from fans on Twitter about the death of star Atlanta rapper Archie Eversole at 37, lots of R.I.P. kind of tweets. But none of the stories mentioned the cause of death, many said the family wanted privacy. Some on Twitter thought it all sounded suspicious, maybe he O.D.'d or something. But I noticed one or two who sounded like they might have been in the guy's circle saying that they heard it was a family fight that got violent.
Sounding like those latter few might have been right:
If I was his family, I would want "privacy" too, on advice of counsel...
