Americans and Russians won the war against Nazism together and should have found a way to commemorate that together despite the current Moscow-Washington polarization

We should certainly remember Russia's part in WWII.
Like Stalin starting the war with Hitler in splitting Poland down the middle in 1939, and then Beria - yes, the one who purged much of Russia in the 20's/30's - ordered all captured Polish officers slaughtered in the Katyn Forest in 1940, and then purged the Crimean Tatars once Russia was fighting the Germans, and if it weren't enough that Hitler had brutalized Poland such as with ovens at Treblinka and gassing at Auschwitz/Birkenau and working to death at other camps for 5 long years, Stalin halted his liberation troops for several months at the edge of Warsaw to let the Nazis wipe out the last of the Poles whose uprising Stalin encouraged. What a complete fucker.
Then Stalin went on to enslave East Europe for another 40 years, as Patton pulled up short in Plsen so the Russians could take Prague, a scene repeated 20 years later when the Russians rolled tanks through Prague to prevent democracy taking hold.
Here's my take on it - FUCK THEM.
Yes, the Russians were braver than shit, fought the Nazis back for much greater distances (Caucusus & Moscow & Stalingrad back to Germany), and should be admired for that fortitude. And then they should be castigated and condemned again and again for the atrocities they perpetrated before, during and after.
The Germans got that apology thing down pretty well. The Russians still haven't clued in that they did anything wrong. Why the Russians now get a pass for genocide, while even Hussein will remembered for 100 years for gassing the Kurds is beyond me. Except that I know history & politics aren't fair. So go tell that to Putin - sometimes you gotta suck hind tit - especially when you're a little shit. He had his Sochi & Crimea, so what's he complaining about?

Small tidbit I learned in recent WWII celebration events - the Germans were going to destroy Prague on the way out, and the Czech uprising failed to get US support because of political agreements with the Russians (Yalta et al) not to interfere, and Russia's lies to Eisenhower that they were already entering the city. (Patton was in Plzen, Eisenhower in Vienna, but neither budged to help - Patton of course because he wasn't allowed)
Fortunately for Prague, a battalion of anti-communist Russians (Russian Liberation Army - ROA) who'd fought earlier under the Germans then turned to support the uprising against the Germans. It was short-lived but just enough, but unfortunately the Allies then turned the ROA over to the Soviet Union to be either executed or worked to death in Siberian camps.
Meanwhile, Putin has joined the festivities to applaud the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact which carved up Poland and agreed to carve up Eastern Europe. The guy knows when to double down - guess worries about atrocities in Poland are a source of pride rather than shame these days - just "security by other means".
