The economy has been in disarray. People have been out of work for years. The banks have been running out of money. It sounds a lot like the Great Depression in the United States. But it is Greece – and in some ways, the situation is worse.
“Greece is in its own Great Depression. But unlike the United States, it won't be able to get back on its feet as quickly,” said Jacob Funk Kirkegaard, an economist at the Peterson Institute for International Economics in Washington. Greece “is shackled by onerous rules and regulations, an aging population and a dysfunctional domestic political system,”

They came to an agreement and now it goes to the Greek Parliament. They have to agree by Wednesday. I guess we will see who survives this battle in the parliament.
Are the Greeks better off then we were in the 1930 depression? No.

But how much in pensions did Americans have in 1933? Were they retiring at 61? How do Greek and EU benefits compare for the Greeks vs what Americans got in 1933? How much does the average Greek have stuffed away in foreign bank accounts to buffer the economic problems? How much of the economy is a black market that doesn't appear in the official poverty figures?
My mom's family AFAIK got a sack of potatoes a week as her big helping hand in the 30's. Probably it's a bit exaggerated/lessened as that generation's style re: suffering, but from the photos I've seen, most in rural areas didn't look so dandy as auto workers queueing for checks - the south especially was beat, but Dust Bowl Oklahoma didn't look much better.
