Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr. on Friday barred local and state police from using federal law to seize cash, cars and other property without evidence that a crime occurred.
Holder’s action represents the most sweeping check on police power to confiscate personal property since the seizures began three decades ago as part of the war on drugs.
Since 2008, thousands of local and state police agencies have made more than 55,000 seizures of cash and property worth $3 billion under a civil asset forfeiture program at the Justice Department called Equitable Sharing.

Geez it's about time! I've read so many nightmare stories regarding this, Kafka like stuff. One bonus point for fixing lousy government, now let's see some more.

It really is Kafka. They take your stuff instead of cut your throat, but it's otherwise The Trial.

Holy shit! That's all it took? This whole atrocity rested only upon the say so of one attorney general thirty years ago?

Just an aside...canny drug king pins of my acquaintance in the meth cooking capital of california, El Sobrante, used regularly to scan the ads announcing tn action "United states vs $50,234.72 . two rolex watches and a 1995 Harley Davidson", to see if they recognized any of the goods in question, which would thus alert them to the current law enforcemnt contact of a particular associate. with potential consequences for themselves.
