What if I told you that the solution to political tribalism was astonishingly — almost embarrassingly — simple?
Comments
Makes sense to me, not the least of which because the hippie counterculture was basically the first anti-tribal rainbow coalition, I.E.: Turn on, tune in and drop out (of your tribe); here brother, let me stick a daisy in your gun barrel, peace; I'd like to buy the world a home and furnish it with love grow apple trees and honey bees and snow white turtle doves…

Hippie culture failed
Leaderless Occupy Wall Street failed.
Getting billions to meditate. Really?

Think about it, billions of people are not going to be meditating. Meditation is presumed to be beneficial in preventing aggression on a national level in a modern, industrialized society. It will be an experiment.
Tribes help move things forward. While people will talk about pity olympics, tribe members see things like high black maternity rates and pressure physicians and medical organizations to address systemic racism. Other tribes recognize the problem and join forces.
Tribes recognize racial bias in how blacks get charged with crimes, how they are sentenced, and differences in jury verdicts, Tribal members set up get out the vote efforts and work to oust overbearing district attorneys. Voters elect district attorney s with a better eye towards social justice.
Tribes recognize voter suppression efforts, and Eric Holder and others establish local organizations to fight back, they also mount court cases.
Tribes see dwindling enrollment in elite schools in places like NYC and put pressure on politicians to change the situation.
Tribes set up #MeToo. It expands to other tribes.
We are conditioned to small groups. Small groups start movements that grow. Martin Luther King Jr. began as the leader of a local bus boycott. This goes on while others deny that racial bias, for example, is pervasive and impacting , health, voting, education, etc. Tribes are told that they focus too much on race, for example. They are dismissed. Tribes seek solutions while others are contemplating meditating about things.

So unless you're tribal you're contemplating your navel? No universal humanists out there? Drainball - cart leading horse, conclusions precede theory.

Here’s the thing about the Tribe, the Tribe recognizes the situation. The country voted for a guy who wouldn’t rent to blacks, questioned the citizenship of President Obama, and never apologized for calling for the death of five black young men. The Tribe realizes that you have to always go the extra mile to get equal treatment.
The Tribe confirms your opinion of things

The Tribe understands.
Those outside the Tribe will come with advice that tells you what you need to do to belong to the larger “oh so caring” total. The others don’t have to do anything because they are already perfect to join their mega-Tribe, all you have to do is be less ......tribal.
The mega-Tribe will also tell you what you are doing wrong in your quest for equality. They have the solution because they’ve been meditating on it.

What hippie goals did hippie culture fail to meet? How does a culture "fail" except via total meltdown like Nazism. Did Norwegian culture fail in the 1870's? Did Polynesian culture fail in the 1920's? This just seems absurd.

Lulu, since you like videos. I was looking up the one Buddhism proponent mentioned, psychologist and author on Buddhism, Robert Wright, and I ran across this video on topic with him. I haven't watched it but I can vouch for the Asia Society, it's a very good nonpartisan scholarly organization dedicated to learning about Asian culture, history and sociology; they wouldn't do garbage. Thought I'd share the link if anyone had more interest:

Thanks. I have followed Wright's Bloggingheads tv which has a wide range of topics for a long time and his later site, The Meaning of Life tv, since its inception. To my mind about one out of three or four at each is excellent.
