NY Times Savages Bank Deal

The New York Times rediscovers its teeth in a ferocious critique of the government's mortgage relief program:
Federal banking regulators are trumpeting an $8.5 billion settlement this week with 10 banks as quick justice for aggrieved homeowners, but the deal is actually a way to quietly paper over a deeply flawed review of foreclosed loans across America, according to current and former regulators and consultants.
To avoid criticism as the review stalled and consultants collected more than $1 billion in fees, the regulators, led by the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency, abandoned the effort after examining a sliver of nearly four million loans in foreclosure, the regulators and consultants said.

A bridge collapsed over Skagit River tonight near Mount Vernon. This was on Interstate 5 both north bound and south bound, four lanes total. No word yet on how many cars went into the water. This is so sad. How many of these will we have to have before we start financing infrastructure? Most of our bridges are in sad shape.

There is no standard definition of the all-important term “wing nut,” so let’s provide one. A wing nut is someone who has a dogmatic commitment to an extreme political view (“wing”) that is false and at least a bit crazy (“nut”).

Local news in Utah said eligible recipients had until the 18th of this month to apply and would receive in the eight hundred dollar range depending on the number of applicants.
Isn't this article support for the conservative argument that the Federal government cannot do anything well quickly and fairly?
If the premise is true, it follows only that the Federal government does not do everything well quickly and fairly.
Fwiw, a friend of mine who knows something about the issue disputes the premise. He says the article is a hatchet job.
I've worked with Joe Hagan before. He's no hatchet man. (Also FWIW).

A comment on the NYT article from a person who said they were employed at a low level doing these reviews said the workers actually doing them were doing a good job at finding abuse, and that's why the whole process was shut down and ended.
The government is doing a good job, at protecting the big banks and the greedy crooks at the top that run them.
