TUCSON — The police were sent to the home where Jared L. Loughner lived with his family on more than one occasion before the attack here on Saturday....the Pima County Sheriff’s Department said on Tuesday. A spokesman, Jason Ogan, said the details of the calls were being reviewed by legal counsel and would be released as soon as the review was complete....
A friend of Mr. Loughner’s also said in an interview on Tuesday that Mr. Loughner, 22, was skilled with a gun — as early as high school — and had talked about a philosophy of fostering chaos.....The account by Mr. Loughner’s friend, a rare extended interview with someone close to Mr. Loughner in recent years, added some details to the emerging portrait of the suspect and his family..... “He was a nihilist and loves causing chaos, and that is probably why he did the shooting, along with the fact he was sick in the head”....

No search made, but, of course, given Az. insane gun laws, had a search uncovered the glock, loaded with the giant clip, it would have made no difference barring a pronouncement from Loughner of his homicidal intentions.,

trying to buy ammunition
That damn Tucson Walmart, they can't keep enough 9mm shells on the shelf to meet the demand..

Az. insane gun laws
I mean, really...anyone can carry--that's the default position. No license, no permit, not even so much as the requirement that you be sufficiently compos mentis to fill out a form legibly?

to fill out a form legibly?
I suppose it offends the 2nd amendment purists to discriminate against the illiterate...

One can hope that slowly, as more"submit to our rules or stay out" security is introduced at government and private events around the state of AZ, some of the less fervent will start to see that all holy hell won't break loose if you are asked to "check your handgun at the door."

As long as the ciizens are assured of adequate police presence and protection, and not by Barney Fife, with one bullet in his pocket .
Then giving up the right to be able to defend oneself, has been provided for. The inherit will to live, of self preservation, granted to another who offers a guarantee with sufficient means to perform. .

Let's take one more (prob'ly futile) run at clarity, shall we?
Given that you reflexively take refuge in the prospect that you will be called upon to whip out your six shooter and blast away some homicidal attacker, are you really going to extrapolate that fantasy into a rule like Arizona's, where no threshold whatsoever is allowed to stand between the gun nut and his nuttiness? Or will you come down, at least, on the side of some minimal test of at least sanity, if not actual marksmanship?

Not to put too fine a point on it, assume, hypothetically, you are a Gun Store Owner, a genuine merchant of death, and the guy whose picture you have seen (with that maniacal grin) comes in to buy the glock in the window.
Do you sell it to him?
by jollyroger on Thu, 01/13/2011 - 3:50pm
At least the perpetrator didn’t get away with murder.
The victim’s deaths avenged.
One wonders how many lives would have been saved?
Had someone had the means to defend ?
“911, what’s your emergency?
“Please hurry there’s a mad man shooting up the place”
“sit tight sir, help is on the way”

Answer the question, you [farging] troll!
[umm, where is this supposed to lead? - d]

If I don't? Should I be concerned about my safety, seeing as how irrational and tormented you appear to be.
Name calling is unecessary in a civilized world.

I want to be heard in defense of "bogus", but that may be an artifact of my grudging affection for Sean Penn, and the adoption of the term by Click 'n Clack.

I understand the NRA was opposed to the Arizona law?
The idea of guns in bars is ludicris.
I am for reasonable control, not knee jerk reactions.

Well, thank you, Jesus! How hard was that? (and why did we have to hear about Luby's on the way...?)

Trolls have feelings too, many of them are humble creatures.
They are offended by those who use the term to disparage others whose viewpoints differ.

Here's a constructive destination: How about an "ignore" function...I recall it from the Straight Dope Board, and perhaps some others. I would pay good money if I didn't have to see anymore posts from R.and I'm sure my blood pressure would profitably abate.
by jollyroger on Thu, 01/13/2011 - 4:27pm
There's already an ignore function in the brain.
by Donal on Thu, 01/13/2011 - 4:29pm
Well said.
by jollyroger on Thu, 01/13/2011 - 4:35pm
Is that the area of the brain that deals with conscience and moral values.
Or civil discussion, and all we have to do, is get angry, which pumps chemicals into the brain shutting down reason, so as to ignore. Sometimes it gets verbalization LA:LA:LA:LA as the hands move to the ears "I can't hear you"
Sounds just like the shooter in Tucson, who just ignored rational thought processes, unable to meditate on others viewpoints a sure sign of lack of maturity He failed the basics of discourse . "Agreeing to disagree without being disagreeable" The shooter had the ignore button on too long.

barring a pronouncement from Loughner of his homicidal intentions
It's just that, ironically in this case, you have a personality who actually might have done just tha in so many wordst. On the other hand, I suspect an AZ fish and wildlife officer might not be too adept at pyschological profiling. (I must give the guy chops, though, for stepping in to check out a red light runner when its probably not a part of his job description.) Not that most of our TSA agents are either.....Policing, can't do without it, can't find enough with brains who want to do it?
by artappraiser on Thu, 01/13/2011 - 3:19pm
actually might have done just that
Yeah, I was thinking the same thing...I sort of fantaized a colloquy thusly:
"Son, what are you gonna do with this weapon--you're not planning on shooting anyone, are you, (insert jovial chuckle from game warden)
Loughner:"That's grammar control officer....I have my rights....I'm defending my perimeter....Mind controllers must be exterminated..."{
whatever.
Actually, one look at that guy's eyes should be enough to trigger a three day evaluative hold if he were going about armed in any sane society.
