Donald Trump met with Republican Senator Tim Scott yesterday to discuss how Trump approaches issues of race. Scott expressed dismay at how Trump reacted to the violence in Charlottesville. Scott felt that "both sides do it" was not the message that was sent by the disturbance. The Senator wanted Trump to forcefully condemn white supremacists and Nazis. Unfortunately, the caption accompanying the White House photo of of the two men identified Scott as "Tom" Scott. For comedians and cynics, "Tom" connects to "Uncle Tom" of "Uncle Tom's Cabin". While the character in the book was heroic, unwilling to reveal the location of escaped slaves, in common usage the word "Tom" is associated with a black man who is willing to cater to the wishes of a racist white master. Black Republicans after years of critizing black Democrats for belonging on the Democratic plantation, now face ridicule because many are reluctant to confront Trump and his ties to white supremacists. The Freudian slip "Tom" is a reminder of black Republican who don't address Trump's racism and their attacks on black Democrats. To be fair, Scott was trying to do a good thing. The sad thing is that Trump has a history of housing discrimination. Birtherism, and now voter suppression. Black voters have given up on Trump.
Black voters have little respect or love for black Republicans. When the news leaked that Trump adviser Omarosa Manigualt's role was being diminished, black news sites responded with glee. Pastor Mark Burns remains an Evangelical advisor to Trump despite the pastor lying about his personal biography. Burns is best remembered for a tweet showing Hillary in blackface and his statement, "Yes Hillary do pander". Burns recently tweeted that he heard that his friend General Flynn is contemplating a run for the Senate and thinks it is a good idea. Black Republicans are given bad representation and this is how black voters view black Republicans. Tom Tim Scott gets caught up in the mix.

Trump signed a Congressional resolution condemning the violence in Charlottesville and white Supremacists. Congress calls the murder of Heather Hyer a terrorist attack. Yesterday Trump met with Tim Scott who suggested that Trump choose words carefully when discussing issues of race. Today Trump again stated that there were "bad dudes" on the left.

Trump cannot break from his false equivalence. A white supremacist killed a white woman.
Cornel West says that if antics had not protected clergy, the white supremacists would have seriously harmed the clergy. There is no equivalence between antifa and the white supremacists. Eddie Glaude of Princeton appeared on "The Last Word" and reminds us that demonizing those protesting white supremacy is an old practice in the United States.
The state of Alabama banned the NAACP after the organization was successful in the Montgomery bus boycott. The NAACP had to file a lawsuit and take the case to the Supreme Court to be able to return to the state.

Martin Luther King Jr. was demonized. Trump is using an old tactic when he accuses antifa of being bad dudes. Neither antifa or Black Lives Matter are the same as the evil Klu Klux Klan.
Tim Scott's response to Trump's latest outburst came in a statement from his Senate office.
Donald Trump has had more than seven decades to change. Donald Trump will not change on issues of race.
