Twitter will ban all political advertising, the company’s chief executive officer Jack Dorsey announced on Wednesday, in a move that will increase pressure on Facebook over its controversial stance to allow politicians to advertise false statements.
The new policy, announced via Dorsey’s Twitter account, will come into effect on 22 November and will apply globally to all electioneering ads, as well as ads related to political issues. The timing means the ban will be in place in time for the UK snap election.
Comments
It should be a law, banning political ads on social media. I've posted a number of comments saying that at the NYT:
At least Twitter wants no part of it.

New one:
The "working with locals" line reminds me that this is not all totally new under sun, as manipulated radio "news" ratcheted up the tribal divisions that ended up as the Rwandan genocide. Don't need Russian trolls to have some pretty devastating effects, is all I am saying.

Though Taibbi denies any nefarious Russian activity in anything. Has become quite the fellow traveler on politics.

this is deeper on topic than it first appears, because Sorkin was trying to tell his own "truth":

Surprising Pew poll results I just ran across from Feb.-March 2019 on "made up news":
This gap extends to how Americans perceive made-up news that is intended to mislead the public: Whites are more likely than blacks to say that a lot of made-up news is created about politics (80% vs. 55%) and that made-up news causes a great deal of confusion (72% vs. 54%) [....]
from 7 facts about black Americans and the news media @ PewResearch.org, Aug. 7.
This was taken from their June 5 full report on topic:
Many Americans Say Made-Up News Is a Critical Problem That Needs To Be Fixed
Politicians viewed as major creators of it, but journalists seen as the ones who should fix it

Getting news from social media is an increasingly common experience; nearly three-in-ten U.S. adults do so often

Look at the chart - it's not like Blacks see fake news as that much less of a problem (42% vs 51% & 48% - less than 10% difference), as they have much more pressing problems. Oddly, Blacks see Climate Change as a much bigger problem than whites, and Sexism as a *much much* bigger problem than whites. And worry more about Terrorism - I don't know how to parse that, except that Terrorism is dealt with at their expense. Unsurprisingly, Blacks worry much more about Violent Crime, Health Care is about equal, and as a major advancement for equality and unity, Drug Addiction tops the list of worries for all three demographics - Go USA!!!
