Tom Steyer's trove of data is fueling speculation about how the Democratic activist might use his new political power.
By Carla Marinucci & David Siders @ Politico.com, Dec. 27
[....] “That’s how you build a grass-roots operations for a presidential campaign. And if you are that guy who started this, that’s certainly a leg up in organizing a 50-state strategy,” said Mike Madrid, a Republican consultant in California who is advising former Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, a Democrat, in his gubernatorial campaign. “That’s what he’s building, and it’s probably second only to Bernie Sanders’ list, and may be eclipsing it. Every election cycle has its own dynamics, and whoever is tapping into the sentiments of their own base usually has an advantage.”
Despite the opposition of party leadership, Madrid said Steyer has shown “there’s a huge vacuum for somebody like Tom Steyer to come in and tap into the activist base — and even beyond that — where some are willing to sign up.” [....]

How I saw this piece: Shadow Dem Party? Maybe even hostile takeover? Learn from the Russian troll army? And before that, from Obama 2008 doing their own whole independent thing?

You posted this piece + followup w/o mentioning Tom Steyer's a *billionaire*?
That's a lot of $27 donations unneeded to get the 50-state thing off the ground.

I thought y'all knew, after all, it's the standard price of entry for upstart now since Citizen's United?
What hit me about this is the same thing as in this great comment from oceankat from a week ago where he points out that Trump hatred skews policy question polls Now virtually every democrat hates Trump. And almost every democrat leaning independent hates Trump. Even many of the moderate republicans hate Trump. Any policy question will be skewed by that Trump hatred. The most passion and numbers in this country right now is in the "we fucking hate Trump" demographic.
"We fucking hate Trump", that's where your majority coalition political activism is just sitting and waiting for pitchforks to be given to them. Trump's a uniter because of, not despite, his best efforts. You can't define what policy they like or don't, because they know Trump doesn't have any policies either. That's why they hate him...they'll just take anyone with any real policies, anyone who will get rid of the clown and be a real president again.

Idunno, I'm starting to warm to him. One of my New Year's Resolutions is to "Like Trump Better". Being post-policy is probably a good thing, no?
Then again, "Get Rid of the Clown" makes a nice bumper sticker. I liked that trending moment in 2017 when Clowns were seemingly omnipresent. Now we've had our fill of them, it's back to the circus trunk.

Fortunately, in this case, most people don't keep their New Year's Resolutions.
