CASE #1

I am from New Hampshire and I welcome you. One false move and boum boum.

The President of the United States comes to give a town meeting. And a man parks himself in the church lot across the street all holstered up and ready for chaos. Locked and loaded. Carrying a sign that says "we must water the tree of liberty ...."  And Chris interviews him and says: FINISH THE GODDAMN LINE.

"The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants."

Actually Chris said:  Why did you bring a goddamn gun to a presidential event?

Look we cannot bring guns into airports and certainly not on planes. We cannot bring guns into office buildings if the building says: NO GUNS ALLOWED.

We cannot bring guns into schools.

Chris was mad because he saw the same damn thing I did in November of '63.

CASE #2

Some more details have emerged from the arrest of 62-year old Richard Terry Young, who was found with a gun concealed in his pickup truck near the site of President Obama's visit yesterday to Portsmouth, New Hampshire.

The Portsmouth Herald reports that Young, who was arrested several hours before Obama arrived, was initially detained for sneaking past the security perimeter. A search of his car found a .380 Kel Tec semi-automatic, hidden in a bag and with a round in the chamber. He was arrested on a charge of having a concealed weapon without a license.

That particular model of gun can be easily concealed, said arresting Officer Lt. Corey MacDonald. "It can fit in the palm of my hand," said MacDonald, who added that the situation of the arrest "would have been very different if it was on his person."

Okie dokie then.  I feel better. Don't you? I mean I have seen hundreds of assassination attempts in dramas over the years but it turns out that they are way to complicated. But here is the kicker as far as I'm concerned:

It should be noted that under New Hampshire's laws, a person can of course transport a weapon in their car, but in this case the apparent crime was in it being hidden in the car -- as opposed to being in plain view on the seat -- and also being loaded. TPM

So all I gotta do is show up at a presidential appearance, outside of a town meeting or even a campaign stop, look around inside of vehicles in the area and get my weapon of choice with a rock or a piece of pipe. 

A line that might also be of interest is that someone claimed the arrested person intended no harm.

CASE #3

Officer Marcus Gonzalez, who is the spokesman for the police in Douglas, Arizona, has now filled me in on exactly what happened at that meet-and-greet last week by Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-AZ) -- the one where somebody dropped a gun.

"Apparently, there was no police report taken, the reason being that it was an accidental drop of a gun," Gonzalez explained to me. "Apparently, a male gentleman that went to the meeting had a gun holstered on his side. And when he sat down, it fell out of his holster."

"We're not really conducting an investigation on this, because there's not really an investigation to conduct," said Gonzalez.

I made sure to ask Officer Gonzalez whether the gun went off when it fell. It did not.

I MADE SURE TO ASK IF THE GUN WENT OFF THOUGH AND HE SAID IT DIDN'T.

Well that's a relief.

Look folks (as rush likes to say) I know that most accidents occur in the home. People fall in their showers and die. People still own  old gas stoves (the kind I grew up with) and sometimes the pilot light goes off and people blow themselves up with a lit cigarette.

We kill ourselves with cars and trucks. 44,000 a year last time I looked. Not a lot of intent there. And we are so adept at finding different ways to do that:

What is a nation to do if our president is shot and killed.  Even if the gun 'accidently' went off?

As if the armed man strutting outside of Obama's town-hall meeting Tuesday wasn't enough cause for concern, a new study by the Southern Poverty Law Center finds that militias are rapidly growing across the U.S. The trend is tied to the economic recession, the first black president, and a spike in conspiracy theories, the Associated Press reports. One special agent with the ATF said the increase in militias was "the most growth he had seen in a decade," and that "All it's lacking is a spark." The report found that 50 new groups had sprouted in only the last few months and that the likelihood of "mass-casualty attacks" are higher than in the 1990s due to the fact that the armed groups are more prone to violence than ever. In addition to the concern over militias, so-called lone wolves, like the man charged with the D.C. Holocaust Museum attack are also worrying the Feds.

THERE ARE PEOPLE OUT THERE ARMED AND DANGEROUS.

It must be hard enough for the Secret Service to make sure the local police are on the up and up; that some imposter has not dressed up as one with evil intent; that a legit member of the force has not been drinking too much and threatening to kill himself.  But now they must, with the help of Homeland Security really be on the lookout for highly trained and armed fascists calling for blood to be spilt.
