True to his Bush genes Jeb has just uttered what is not only the table prize of all Bush out-of- touch commentaries but ignores the true problem of our economy---substandard growth caused by the misguided austerity policies of his own Republican party.
His comment was, reportedly, when asked about how to achieve 4% growth---"It means that people need to work longer hours and, through their productivity, gain more income for their families." Joseph and Mary, the Pope and Lucifer, where do you start?
Work longer hours, who the heck is he kidding? Americans already work longer hours than most any other developed country. How far out of touch do you have to be from the average worker in this country to utter such nonsense?
"....through their productivity. So, the obvious here:
---two hundred years of industry experience notwithstanding--- folks who work longer hours get refreshed, make less mistakes because now there is no hope of getting home for dinner so let's put the petal to the metal. Get R done, wahoo, this is fun. When I was spending down my assets doing woodworking I came to realize that when I got in that frame of mind, I'm the greatest, I had already screwed the project up and the mania was my subconscious trying to get through to me that I was about to screw up again. Longer hours will lead to screwups, loss of productivity, not increased productivity.
The other sly message of "through their productivity" is that people already are unproductive and through more effort can do better. This is the shop owner mentality, "if they would just do their jobs better"---what a damned put down of workers.
Maybe what Jeb meant was to add minutes to every hour, creating a 70 minute hour. Yep, productivity per hour would most likely go up. Or maybe he was trying to sort out in his own mind the concept of labor productivity, output per hour worked. Versus output per more hours worked.
At this stage of our recovery, there actually is pretty full employment. I'm not discounting that there are structural issues and lower participation. But as things stand now, employment is high while productivity has stalled out.
Productivity is generated by more investment to make the jobs that people do more efficient---that is, more output per hour worked. But companies are not going to invest to increase productivity if there is slack demand because of slow growth.
What makes Bush's statement so unforgivable is that the austerity his party has enforced on the American people is contributing in large measure to slow growth.
But even more egregious in Bush's triumphalistic economics is the lack of any reference to pay. Want more money for your family? Work more hours. But more pay per hour? Not so much.
Bush's statement is an insult to American workers and to Economics 101.

Jeb issues explanation. He says he was referring to people looking for full time jobs. Right.

Gee Wiz Oxy,,.Texas really got the smarter one. As a resident of Florida, you can trust me on this. If you are expecting some political smarts from John Everett Bush, you won't find it. You can dress him up anyway you want and he will still trip all over himself.

Thanks, trking. I am astounded by his statement. Fool me twice, er...just work it out.

I bet JEB's handlers had to hit the bar, to tie one on, after that came out of his mouth.

This is all I got.
by Richard Day on Thu, 07/09/2015 - 4:40pm
Hey you Mr. Day. That's a hahahahah.
In fact there is no doubt in my mind that Jeb's mindset of a typical worker is exactly that. This guy is definitely in the 47%.

Does this mean that Donald Trump really is their smartest candidate?
by rmrd0000 on Thu, 07/09/2015 - 5:03pm
I don't know. Is Rick Perry running?
by Oxy Mora on Thu, 07/09/2015 - 5:25pm
Those glasses do make Perry look smart.

Americans need to work more hours, but the new overtime rules are bad for the country. I must be missing something.

The harder you work, the more pleasure you instill.
Some working woman told me that a long long time ago.
hahahahahah
by Richard Day on Thu, 07/09/2015 - 6:02pm
Encouragement?
by barefooted on Thu, 07/09/2015 - 6:21pm
Well we all need encouragement at times.
hahahahahah

Yup. That's his solution to growing the economy; you must increase productivity for your corporate overlords so they can make more profits which they will never, ever share with you or use to pay their fair share of taxes.
This is the nonsensical mindset of someone stuck embracing the trickle down theory of economics. Unfortunately for Jeb, there is ample evidence that proves trickle down economics is a complete and utter crock of sh*t.

I was thinking about this issue that you present.
Recall Sinclair Lewis.
If I have a factory with teen age girls, and I lock them all in without fire protection and I make them work 16 hours a day....
How much more production might we expect?
Produce more, give up your personal lives more, give up your health prospects more....
FUCK JEB.
Harsh isn't it?
Well, life is harsh and so is Jeb.
by Richard Day on Thu, 07/09/2015 - 11:51pm
On the other hand, working 16 hours a day, those young girls will be too tired to have illicit sex with illegal aliens and so abortion rates will drop dramatically as will Welfare rolls. Presto! Jeb solves
twothree problems with one solution!by MrSmith1 on Fri, 07/10/2015 - 12:01am
It is so awful to think like this. Is it not?
And yet, if you do not think like this....all attempts at reality fail!
DAMN

Maybe the Jebster was thinking as a plantation owner. You can get more production out of slaves by making them work longer hours. But you won't get more productivity.
More or less since the end of slavery, the elimination of child labor and the onset of the modern industrial period the idea of better results is labor productivity---more results per hour. Mostly this is achieved through education, better equipment, loyalty via benefits, and other improvements. Of course because the Jebster doesn't want to cause corporations any headaches, just work the lazy sob's longer.
by Oxy Mora on Fri, 07/10/2015 - 12:12am
Oxy you must recall when I attacked the Mitt's factories in Indonesia or whatever?
You work or you die.
Oh I am just too damn mad to continue.
Well done.

I guarantee he will say several more stupid things before he loses the race. Wait to you see him debate. Old Lawton Childes hung him out to dry in his good o'boy Florida cracker style by talking about "old he coons" when Jebby pointed out Lawton's age in a debate. Jeb was ahead in the polls until that night and very cocky. Old Walk'n Lawton cleaned his clock when he explained how smart old "he" coon could be. After that a bunch of good o'boy's with tree stands and coon dogs shifted their vote to the Democrat because Jeb looked like every bit of the snotty aristocrat that he was.
