My Presence Is My Charity: Life On The Obama Plantation

JayZ is a hip-hop mogul who could not bring himself to stop referring to Black women as female dogs despite being married to Beyonce and the father of a beautiful daughter. JayZ's latest album "Magna Carta the Holy Grail" became instant platinum on release. JayZ is having a "beef" with Harry Belafonte who feels that JayZ is not making use of his social status and wealth to properly advance Progresive causes. In response to Belafonte's crticism, Jay replied that his mere presence is "charity". He also said that since Obama was the first Black President, that Obama should be left alone when he speaks on any issue. All Blacks take their political cues from JayZ. The author confirms this by saying that Blacks agree with JayZ.

The comments about charity and Obama being above criticism led to an article that chastised Blacks for placing Obama in a culture of celebrity and failing to question the President. Given all the trials and tribulations facing the Black community, we should be in the streets protesting. Regarding JayZ's "charity" statement, it does not appear that just his presence is all that is required. The article notes that JayZ founded the John Carter Foundation to help fund college-bound-at-risk youth; he gave one million dollars to The Red Cross' Hurricane Katrina aid fund and helped gain attention to the water crisis in Africa committing to build 1,00 clean water pumps on the continent. He used ticket sales as a tool to encourage hip hip fans to the need to act on global poverty. Obviously, JayZ does not really think that his presence is the only "charity".

It should be noted that the President did not say that he should be above criticism, JayZ said that the President should be above criticism. When Obama voiced support for Gay marriage, Black Conservative preachers had no problem criticizing Obama. Blacks did not run to the streets en masse to oppose Obama;s position, because their opinion on the issue was shifting. Ten years ago only 27% of Blacks supported Gay marriage. Times are changing. According to the author of the article Blacks should have criticized Obama just because it was the thing to do.

Obama's cuts in grants effecting minority college students displeased HBCU Presidents, students and their parents. The Black Caucus also criticized Obama cuts.A change in the program was recently announced. We await confirmation that students will actually benefit from the changes.Protest occurred it just wasn't televised.

The Fair Sentencing Act reduced the disparity between crack and powder cocaine. The Act was passed by Congress. Eric Holder recently announced that mandatory minimum federal charges would no longer be used for non-violent drug offenders. This came after years of protest about the impact of drug charges on the Black community.

Rather than reflexively criticizing the President and Eric Holder when the GOP attempted to suppress votes in the 2012 Presidential election, the Black electorate voted in historic numbers.

The article charges that Blacks blame the Republicans for everything, including the lack of job creation. this is amazing given that the GOP House did indeed, block the jobs bill crafted by the White House. The author of the article lacks perspective.

The article also points out the "attacks" on Cornel West and Tavis Smiley that are personal and do not stick to the facts. The author says that personal attacks are unacceptable. To gain guidance for how to form a proper argument. My starting place was a July 22,2013 interview of dear brother Cornel West by Amy Goodman on "Democracy Now!". West begins the discussion which occurred after the Zimmerman acquittal by stating that President Obama had no moral standing to make a judgment on the case because Obama is a global George Zimmerman. Next we are told that Obama will not address the flaws in the criminal justice system.West says Obama has re-niggerized the Black leaders. The leadership is all on the Obama plantation. Wattree can learn much on how not to formulate personal attacks from Cornel West.

In summary, the article takes a ridiculous statement from a hip-hop mogul who has all the baggage associated with being a hip-hop musician including the profanity, misogyny and corporate ties, as a take-off point to criticize the Black community for not being hard on Obama. JayZ joked about "charity" but actually does do charitable work. His actions put the lie to the idea that he believes that on his presence is charity enough.

The article would have you believe that Blacks have been distracted by a "beef" between JayZ and Harry Belafonte. Untrue. The article suggests that "personal" attacks divert attention from the real battle. Untrue. The author of the article seems ignorant of the obstacles that the GOP create to prevent job creation.

Other than the fact that the article is short on factual data that Blacks are distracted from the important issues, it was an excellent article.

    Interesting.

Seems we're all progressing towards using tribal instincts ... be it race, religion or brand of politics ... to justify the position we're staking out in the world.

It started out tribal. When Black voter began to shift from Hillary towards Obama, we were told by some Progressives  that it was because of race. This is the same rhetoric that we heard from the Conservatives when Obama was chosen over McCain/Palin and Romney/Ryan. It could not be that Blacks selected the best option.

Black communities are fighting active GOP efforts all over the United States to keep Blacks from voting. Yet we are told that we spend too much time paying attention to th GOP and not criticizing Obama.

Blacks spoke out against a Democratic mayor in Chicago who is closing schools and against Obama when he cut thousands of students off of a college student loan program. I guess it wasn't loud enough.

A mayor in NYC wants minority youth to show their papers at random to a police officer. Despite losing Stop and Frisk in court, the mayor is appealing the decision and is doubling down by wanting to fingerprint residents of public housing. NYC also hs a situation where a victim who reports a crime committed against them in public housing can be evicted for being involved in a crime.

We have a GOP that blocks any attempt at a jobs bill, but again we as a people are too quick to blame the GOP.

The Black community is dealing with threats up close and personal. We on a temporary victory in Stop and Frisk. We lost a court challenge to closing 49 schools in Chicago.

When we bring up,Trayvon Martin, the Right asks why we are not addressing crime in Black neighborhoods. The truth is that we are fighting crime in poor urban neighborhoods. It only makes the news when a teen who participated in the inauguration gets killed blocks away from Obama's home. We again have to address a comment made to divert attention from the lack of jobs in the poor community that the GOP played a big role in creating.

The Black community, is fighting on a host of fronts, and what we get from some Progressives is the same diversion. This time it's why aren't we criticizing Obama about drones or surveillance. Part of the reason is that a lot of us are dealing with issues in local communities.

There are battles to be fought on a host of fronts. We are dealing with ours. Instead of telling us what we need to do, why not make donations to the Electronic Freedom Foundation to mount the court battle that is needed to end the infringement on privacy. The Black community is not the enemy.

We have women's rights activists addressing the assault on women's bodies by the GOP. I have not heard one peep about asking them why they aren't criticizing Obama about drones or surveillance.

If you aren't going to help in the assault on the Black community by the GOP, at least stop take shots at us from the rear.

Here is commentary on David Sirota using Trayvon martin as a take off point to call Obama a George Zimmerman equivalent. Anyone who stopped for a second bfore pressing send could realize that this would not go over well in the Black community. At the end of the day, we don't expect much from the Cornel West's or the David Sirota's. Fortunately we do have enough people of diverse etnicities and sexual orientations that get what is going on. They have been with us in voter suppression pushback efforts, Stop and Frisk battles and in attempts to challenge Stand Your Ground. They are also working with us on foreclosures, etc.

On the drones and surveillance, we'll see you in court. We be in the next courtroom fighting another battle that is just as important.

Excellent comment.   I see some new leadership coming from the Dream Defenders here in Florida.  They will be in DC at the 50th anniversary march and have a featured part in it.  Then back to Florida to kick off voter drive and fight voter suppression.  This group has handled themselves very well and MLK would have been proud of them.  They realize that they have to turn out minority voters and get poor people to vote if there is going to be any real changes in this state.  They are well organized and a growing group.

They are inspiring. The future is in good hands.

It's somewhat ironic that Obama is cutting grants and setting up new restrictions for student loans, since he said he wanted to make it possible for everyone to afford going to college.

Obama made changes in the PLUS loan program that eased restrictions to obtaining the loans. The changes came after pressure from HBCU Presidents threatening a law suit, the Congressional Black Caucus, Black parents and students. The criticism when unreported by most MSM and most have gone undetected by some Progressives.

The idea of the initial changes were because of a high default rate on the loans. The Right responded in their typical fashion saying that easing the loan criteria will drown the minority students in debt. The GOP argues this while actually changing the interest rates on student loan programs that will drive students and their parents into debt.

The overall goal is to change how student loans are structured for all students. There is an industry that profits from skewering students and parents in debt.

I only read the link about the restrictions. Good thing I'm not being graded on this.
