Trump Shutdown Will End When...

How will the shutdown end? Job action, sick in, strike, walk-out by enough of the federal workforce to slow functions of their department or agency, and create a crisis for the airlines, the federal prisons, the IRS, the federal courts, food safety inspections, NASA, CDC..?..you name it. Your guess is as good as mine. Trump doesn't know or care about what the 800,000 federal workers do. He doesn't care about them or their families.

Trump: I am the Very Model of a Modern Major General

President Donald Trump said Wednesday that he essentially "fired" former Secretary of Defense Jim Mattis, criticizing the outgoing defense chief's service in the Marine Corps and his two years leading the Defense Department.

"What's he done for me? How had he done in Afghanistan? Not too good," Trump said at a Cabinet meeting... "As you know, President Obama fired him, and essentially so did I," he explained to reporters, contradicting an earlier statement.

Trump: A Petulant, Spiteful, Incurious Ignoramus

WASHINGTON — President Trump said on Sunday that he would remove Defense Secretary Jim Mattis, who issued a stinging rebuke of the president when he announced his resignation last week, from his post by Jan. 1, two months before he had planned to depart.

"One aide said that though Mr. Trump already had the resignation letter when he praised Mr. Mattis, he did not understand just how forceful a rejection of his strategy Mr. Mattis had issued."

    One problem with partisanship

Posting this because it made me think. Dagbloggers for the most part are great on sticking to the policies they favor no matter who is supporting them . But it gets at how partisan hatred, or hatred for one man or woman, does have the tendency to blind:

And will get no credit from the left AT ALL. https://t.co/I3wnvL0pEk

    SHADES OF ROY MOORE

Roy Moore is no longer 'hot news', to say the least.

Recently I was reminded of an older interview with this Alabama embarrassment by a recent interview with our current presidential embarrassment.

    When Affirmative Action was White

We had a recent discussion on the programs of the New Deal, how 'race neutral' the legislation was, passing with strong support from the southern Jim Crow states. This fact leading to some suspicion as to it's intended impacts on minority populations.

Was it, in fact, a progressive policy primarily aimed at whites, not generally disenfranchised blacks? The book below argues the New Deal and programs like the GI Bill not only were not race neutral, they actually increased the economic and educational inequality of blacks and whites, in effect, they were "affirmative action" for whites. In the book the author argues that the gap created has not yet been remedied (2006).

When You Lose an Ammon Bundy, is the Con Dying?

    Wikipedia:

Ammon is the son of rancher Cliven Bundy, who was the central figure of the 2014 Bundy standoff regarding unpaid grazing fees on federally-owned public land.

The French Who Never Learned German

    President Donald Trump today:

Emmanuel Macron suggests building its own army to protect Europe against the U.S., China and Russia. But it was Germany in World Wars One & Two - How did that work out for France? They were starting to learn German in Paris before the U.S. came along. Pay for NATO or not! @realDonaldTrump

    SICKNESS UNTO DEATH

I do not wish to hold myself out as an intellectual.

The best I can say is that over the last six decades I have read stuff.

'Sickness Unto Death' is a phrase that has stuck with me over those decades.

This phrase became a title of a book from Soren Kierkegaard,

    Bearing the burden of incompetence

Cast your mind back to the furor that surrounded the aborted promotion of Doctor Ronny to VA administrator, a brouhaha which echoed recently as Jon Tester felt the (impotent) sting of Trump's continuing sulk.

Along with the vacancies that have made swiss cheese of the diplomatic corps, it emerges that the VA is replete with unfilled, yet essential, jobs.

    ELECTION 2018 LIVE CHAT!

Let us hope that the musical theme for tonight will be:

Worth a reminder: Almost all violent extremists share one thing: their gender

Article @ The Guardian from April of by Michael Kimmel  who is the author of Guyland and Angry White Men. He directs the center for the study of men and masculinities at New York's Stony Brook University:

Almost all violent extremists share one thing: their gender

Most people who commit acts of terrorist violence are young men. We overlook their gender to our peril

This tweet made me remember (doh!) that in high school, I helped fight for this to be possible

This not just another tweeter, this the senior Senator from Hawaii

If young people vote in numbers anywhere near the percentages of other generations they can get any policy they want. College affordability, climate, civil rights, healthcare, immigration whatever your generation decides. It’s your government if you just take it over.

    538 is no more

I've been posting 538's daily forecast for the House and Senate election.

It's aged out of From the Readers so I'll stop.

What I've learned is that nothing has changed much during that week of ten days: 538 calculates the dems

will carry the House and not the Senate. By about  they would have done when I started.

I'll post it again on Election eve.

Does Locating migrant holding pens on military bases + revocation of birthright citizenship =concentration camps beyond the reach of Habeas Corpus?

We have leaned in recent months that the proposed solution to the flood of refugees seeking adjudication of their asylum claims will not be to increase the number of tribunals, but to prepare to house for years on miitary bases the resulting multitudes frozen "in transit" (usage taken advisedly)

Hard upon adoption of that policy, the visible tide feeding this population is routinely forced by similar (and explicitly intentional) under resourced processing personnel at "ports of entry" to congregate on the Mexican side of thee border for indeterminate (and increasingly interminable) periods of time.
