    Clijsters vs Rus

If you don't want to know the results of the match at Roland Garros, don't read this.

I caught part of Clijsters v Rus at Roland Garros this morning. Clijsters had won the first set 6-3 and led something like 4-1 in the second.  Rus was tall, blond and thoroughly cute, and wore a colorful outfit. Her pale looks reminded me of Dája Bedáňová, who had a great run to the quarterfinals of the US Open back in 2001, except Dája was thin as a shoelace. I had a major tennis crush on Daja and thought she might become a top tenner. I saw her play in person at the Pilot Pen a few years later. She was good but her ranking was dropping steadily and she retired by 2005. She had the talent, but I think her body was just too frail to last on the tour.

Anyway, I decided that Rus' tennis outfit looked delicious: an orange sherbet top, cherry sherbet bottom with lime sherbet fringes. Clijsters was wearing cranberry and grape, and serving for the match at 5-2. I had to take my morning shower. I come out and Rus has climbed back to 4-5. Clijsters is hitting loopy shots, while Rus is leaning in and tagging the ball hard and deep. The commenter is saying how little practice Kim has had since twisting her ankle at a wedding, and, uh, she has about 40 unforced errors, too. Rus goes ahead 6-5, then breaks Clijsters to take the second set 7-5. I have to leave for work.

Rus, I find out, is not Russian. She is from the Netherlands and her first name is Arantxa, like Sanchez-Vicario. There must be lots of little Steffis, Monicas and Gabrielas out there, too. So do I want a tennis crush on someone is not only way too young, but is even named for someone way too young? We'll see if she wins the third set.

One of Arantxa's buddies at RolandGarros.com blogged the match, so here is the third set I missed:

12.50 pm: My little Rancher, Naranja, Oranje comes back from 15-40 to hold, on the back of a great deep service winner. 1-1. Kom op, my little (well six-foot) Dutchie.

12.54 pm: Rus, serving for a 3-1 lead and Clijsters gets the craziest net cord ever. Backhand drive hits the tape, bounces onto the top of the net post, then falls into court for a drop shot winner. Clijsters apologises, Rus isn't deterred and serves out the game to 15 to claim the advantage.

1.05 pm: Is there any way Clijsters can come back now against Rus? The Belgian No.2 seed is definitely in trouble out there and her camp's concern is written all over coach Wim's face. she has a chance to break back for 2-4 but can't convert. Her lateral movement definitely isn't up to its usual standard. Rus holds for 5-1.

1.10 pm: So the biggest upset of the tournament so far as Kim Clijsters crashes out to Arantxa Rus 6-3, 5-7, 1-6 after holding a match point in the second set. An incredibly disappointing end to Clijsters' campaign - she might have been seeded no.2 here but many thought she was favourite for this tournament. Easily the biggest win of 20-year-old Rus' career in only her second match against a top-10 player. Seems she's learned a lot since taking Maria Sharapova to three sets in Madrid earlier this month.

So the draw just opened up for Maria Sharapova, who is playing well and is in the same half as Clijsters, err Rus. And if Caroline Wozniacki can get past defending champion Francesca Schiavone, she won't have to face Clijsters in the final, but may face a resurgent Sharapova - or even Rus.

Update: A French upstart, 17 yo Caroline Garcia almost put Sharapova out of the tourney, too. Sharapova was behind 1-4 in the second set, then woke up, shrugged off the chilly, windy conditions and won 3-6, 6-4, 6-0.

Are you surprised Wozniacki lost?  What's keeping her from winning a major at this point?

Have you been to other French Opens or is this a first?

    Paris in the springtime--sweet.

I'm not that surprised because Wozniacki seems vulnerable to any strong hitter having a good day. I'm not at Roland Garros, I just have the Tennis Channel for the first time. I've been to Roland Garros, but not during the tournament.
