Yay!

But also proud of Cuomo, the Republicans (as Trope points out above) who crossed party lines, even Bloomberg, who really did put his substantial resources to work.

Sadly, a big boo for the Catholic bishops of NY though. Yes, to be expected. But one tries to hope that they could at least try to keep their mouths shut sometimes.

Sat, 25 Jun 2011 15:38:05 +0000 anna am comment 125971 at http://dagblog.com In one of the branches of the http://dagblog.com/comment/125968#comment-125968
In reply to New York State Legalizes Same Sex Marriage

In one of the branches of the overall story that I find interesting was this:

With his position still undeclared, Senator Mark J. Grisanti, a Republican from Buffalo who had sought office promising to oppose same-sex marriage, told his colleagues he had agonized for months before concluding he had been wrong.

“I apologize for those who feel offended,” Mr. Grisanti said, adding, “I cannot deny a person, a human being, a taxpayer, a worker, the people of my district and across this state, the State of New York, and those people who make this the great state that it is the same rights that I have with my wife.”

A Republican flip-flopped (in the right direction, no pun intended) on this issue which he had taken an explicit stand on it during his election. I have always hated the way flip-flopping has become an inherently negative action when associated with politicians. We aren't going to make the progress we need to make unless some politicans start doing some serious flip-flopping on a whole host of issues.

Grisanti has given me today's moment of hope we might actually head down the right path as a nation (again no pun intended).

Sat, 25 Jun 2011 15:11:36 +0000 Elusive Trope comment 125968 at http://dagblog.com It's great news.
