The framing of this issue is totally screwed up.

I'm seeing public poll questions that ask: "Are you in favor of raising the debt ceiling?"

Not:

"Are you in favor of raising the debt ceiling if we cut Social Security and Medicare, and cut taxes on already wealthy people?"

Or:

"Do you support Republican efforts to cause the United States government to default on our debt, unless Social Security and Medicare are cut and taxes on the already wealthy are cut?"

Or:

"Many economists say that if the Republicans in Congress succeed in causing the U.S. government to default on its debts, this will make it harder for the federal government to pay its bills such as Social Security checks, Medicare payments and veterans' benefits; raise money in a national emergency; could lead to a major global dip in the stock market; and could do further damage to the economy. Do you support, or oppose, the Republican effort in Congress to do this?"

Why is this the case? Is it that Obama could have the upper hand on how this issue is being framed if he wanted to, but doesn't want to? Or that he would want to but doesn't know how or doesn't believe he can establish that frame successfully? It was said about the former Soviet Union that it was "a riddle, wrapped in a mystery, inside an enigma." I feel that way about the President I voted for.

Hudson has been around for a while, born 1939. I note he wrote a prescient piece for Harpers in 2006, well before the real estate crash, called The New Road to Serfdom, which pretty well laid out the coming crash pdf at link. He makes frightening good sense for not voting in 2012, and hoping obama loses, to empower what is left of the Democratic Party.

Now if what Hudson says is true - and he has a reputation for being fairy savvy - that would mean across the board deflation. Wages, income, prices, stocks...the whole shebang. But that is very, very risky and could wind up as a major depression with lots of people out of work and lots of discontent.
