was one mark of civilized behavior two thousand years ago..In addition to Beck's sickening remark we've recently been reminded of the Murdoch media hacking into the messages of a murdered 13 year old. Not exactly the same thing but close enough.

IMO no accident, but stemming from a.characteristic of one strain of conservative thought-the so- called "tough mindedness" of people so convinced of the rightness of their position that they feel entitled to ignore the ordinary social conventions.

Another example: Dinesh diSouza ridiculing blacks when he edited the Dartmouth newspaper. Just adolescent behavior? No. A reflection of an enduring position which that particular adolescent had not yet learned to conceal.

Anne Applebaum at Slate has an interesting take on Breivik. Innocent Norwegians were attacked rather than innocent immigrants, because in his mind, the Norwegian government wasn't legitimate. The murders were an attempt to topple a government that was not addressing the immigration issue.

Literary references are mentioned as providing a theme for how an illegitimate government is the source of homicidal tendencies. She points out that the birthers make similar arguments about the current White House administration being illegitimate.

At least there wasn't video of Beck at a chalkboard making idiotic connection between unconnected facts. Beck was too toxic for Fox, that says all that need be said about this hate-monger.

Breivik was a fan of another hate-monger in the US, Pam Geller, who has a website "Atlas Shrugs". Geller labels all Muslims as being terrorists. In the early hours after the massacre, Geller blamed the attacks on Muslims. After the dust settled, and it was clear that Breivik was the attacker, Geller wondered why people would think that she had anything in common with Breivik.
