I spent two and a half years at Hill AFB outside Odgen, Utah in the mid-70's. It was easier to drive to Salt Lake City to drink beer and shoot pool than to go to downtown Odgen. SLC was only 50% mormon while Odgen was over 85%. And the locals had no problem letting you know your place in a heartbeat.

It is interesting to note that Obama's recent gains in Nevada according to the pollsters were with Independents, not Democrats. Recent actions by the administration, including Obama's approach to debt deal, are seen by some (me included) as an effort to win over the moderate independents in places like Nevada. That he has made gains with them would lead one to believe that one shouldn't expect any radical change to the administration's approach.

Having lived in SE Idaho for a little while, where the town was 95% Mormon, I can say there is also serious anti-Mormon sentiment by those who are seen as and are treated as outsiders by the Mormons in those places where they dominate. There might be a few who live in these areas who are normally inclined to vote Republican who would vote for Obama (or at least contemplate it) because of their fear and/or distaste of the power structure with its center in Salt Lake City. I'm not saying Romney would be beholden to the Church elders in the way that some feared JFK would be to the Pope. It's just that it pretty easy to come to that conclusion when one has experienced the unabashed way they control the local scene.

Romney is a mormon and there are a hell of a lot of them in Nevada ... especially outside of Las Vegas. You can count Utah, Nevada, Arizona, Idaho, Eastern California, Oregon and western Colorado and Wyoming as his base. And as Bu$h proved ... a whole lot of little numbers beats a fewer amount of larger numbers.

Too bad Bachmann doesn't understand the history of mormons ... their first settlement was at Nauvoo, Illinois which was along the Mississippi river east of Iowa. Not a pretty history of their treatment by the locals so I doubt she would have much impact with them if she were the nominee. Mormons are harsh with those not of their belief.
