I think you got it exactly right. Jack was much more than a successful politician; he was a successful human being. On top of the energy with which he campaigned in this spring's election (cane or no cane), he connected with Canadians as a person. Many who had never considered voting "socialist" decided that Jack was that very rare creature: a politician they actually liked. A lot of people, and not just us lefties, feel we've lost not just a leader but a friend.
