Destroying trade unions is important for two (2) reasons. First trade unions can organize large number of people and money to publicly oppose an Ayn Rand style attack on the working class. Second, the goal of trade unions is to increase the lifestyle of their workers via increase creature comforts and safety in the workplace. Trade unions also work to increase wages. From an Ayn Rand standpoint this is theft of money from the people who actually create jobs.

Lewis F Powell wrote a famous memo to the Chamber of Congress laying out the methods business had to employ to destroy unions and create a public atmosphere where the goals of the business class would be accepted by the university, the media and the public.

To a large extent the Powell Manifesto has succeeded.
