Before I went to college, I saw a comedian do a brief standup routine on some talk show, Cavett, Griffin, I dunno. He opened by saying, "I majored in philosophy in college." A few people applauded and he continued, "I wanted to graduate and open a little philosophy shop." That got a big laugh, and I've always thought of that line when I hear about people getting very academic degrees.

Speaking from experience, physics/math degrees are in even less demand than liberal arts. Engineering degrees are the ones in demand.

My stepdaughter got an anthro degree, too, and spent a semester in Ecuador. She's working in NYC getting benefits for Hispanic-speaking homeless.

Oh, my. Here's a funny thing...for the past year + we've housed and fed a couple of college grads "just until we find work, okay?". One has a Masters in cultural anthro, one a degree in physics/math. Guess which one finally found a job? Yep, the anthro grad. (They moved out Sept.1. )

Following links within the MJ article makes it clear liberal arts degrees are just as valuable as STEM degrees, it just takes a while to balance out after graduation.

Scott's reasoning is short-sighted. Very much like Snyder's reasoning here in Michigan. There is a big push on right now to restructure the college/university system here so there is less diversification of disciplines. Some real slim pickin's gonna be served up for the college bound if Snyder gets his way.

I live near New College and read the local paper on this. My grandson wanted to go there because they were the only college close enough to commute that offered Chinese. It was too expensive. It is one of the top small liberal arts colleges in the country. He is doing very well at another local state college. Rick Scott is stupid. His goal is to dismantle public education in Florida and people are seeing right through his statements. The rumor is that Charley Christ is considering running for his old office. Maybe people are only wishing out loud. Scott won't get a second term.
