But I am fat and happy anyway--although not so happy about being fat.

I discovered from a social worker friend of mine that the real problem relating to food in this country is that many people do not know how to cook and are afraid to learn.

There are certain times during the week when meat will be marked 'special' and you can get a pound of hamburger for a buck less. Of course you better cook it up during the next three days. Same goes for other pork and chicken and beef products.

Coffee has just sky rocketed. What used to cost 5 or 6 bucks is now ten or even twelve bucks.

Whole wheat bread can cost almost 4 bucks!

I was going to do a blog on this personal experience a few months ago. There are graphs and there are statistics and there are government issued numbers but the real test is at the grocery store we frequent.

So coupons and specials can cut your bills by 25% or more each week.

And watching the food channel and hitting the web for recipes can really help. Mac and cheese with a little help from vegetables can make a cheap and nutritious dish--it all has to do with how the dish is prepared.

My heart goes out to those families with two or three children--nobody is hungrier than a 12 year old boy--where both parents work. A concerted effort on the part of each and every member of the middle class family is necessary.

Thanks for bringing this issue up.

By the way rush notes that it is good for kids to go dumpster diving. Builds character!

http://mediamatters.org/mmtv/201006160041

Mon, 12 Dec 2011 21:58:32 +0000 Richard Day comment 143337 at http://dagblog.com
