IMO, how the data is being used is more than a little misleading. To quote a comment on the thread..

calculus 101. if the rate goes up faster, that just means that the integral of the rate is at a lower level if the rate is essentially zero. that’s all it means.

That's not my only issue with the methodology; but the observation is more succinct than mine were.

While admittedly an ad-hominem, IMO there are some serious concerns with Karl Smith's typical application of facts to analysis that make me less than inclined to ignore my own misgivings about the methodology in deference to his academic credentials on this one.
