He asserts that widely divergent sects like Pentecostals, Baptists, Lutherans, Catholics banding together under the term Christian is a recent phenomenon stimulated by anti-abortion politics. In the past, sectarians hated each other worse than they hated atheists. If you don't unify Christians in this way, atheists are a more significant percentage of voters than many of these sects.

Secondly, he thinks that there is a disconnect between what Christians say they believe and what they demonstrate that they really believe. The extreme example he gives is of a mother who kills her children and says that God told her to do it. An entirely Christian courtroom will never actually entertain the possibility that God really told her to do that—they will dismiss her as crazy or a liar. Yet they all profess during the debates, and in speeches, that God is takes a hands-on approach in this world.

He also mischievously notes that the most religious President—that is the President who references religion, quotes the Bible, etc., the most in his daily routine—of the past several years is not who we might expect.

Tue, 10 Jan 2012 17:00:42 +0000 Donal comment 146207 at http://dagblog.com Speaking as an atheist who's http://dagblog.com/comment/146202#comment-146202
In reply to Penn Jillette: An Atheist's Guide to the 2012 Election

Speaking as an atheist who's concerned with the environment (which I know you are as well - the environment, I mean, I don't know about your religious views), I don't put much stock in Jillette's opinion, although I would hear him out if I was currently on a machine where I could play the sound.
