I just think you could take it a step further.

Our cohort's failure to step up at a time when the military made aggressive use of Stop-Loss, and career military people and reservists were forced to serve far longer than they signed up for, is an extreme example of the pattern you describe. We did not serve when others were quite literally forced to go above and beyond.

I would suggest that "we were not called" lets us off the hook a bit. It's one thing to not volunteer and not be drafted when the system that's in place is meeting the military needs. It's far worse when that system, and the people in it, have to go beyond their enlistment period and are all but enslaved to fight on our behalf.

For us to sit back, watch Stop-Loss and think,"That's not really fair. Sucks to be you," and not take on the burden kind of makes us cowards in ways beyond what you describe.

- Patrick

Thu, 31 May 2012 16:42:45 +0000 Patrick comment 155903 at http://dagblog.com
