Tyler Clary, however, surged from a close third (55.99) to Phelps (55.66) and Lochte (55.88) in the Fly leg, to first after the Back leg. At the turn from Back to Breast, Clary led 1:58.04, Lochte was second 1:58.20 and Phelps was third 1:58.49. But Clary faded to third in the Breast and Lochte pulled a body length ahead of Phelps. At the turn from Breast to Free, Lochte led 3:08.53, Phelps was at 3:09.81 and Clary was at 3:10.57.

At 350m, Clary only trailed Phelps by 0.28 seconds, but he couldn't find the speed to overtake him and trailed Phelps by two seconds at the finish. In the last half-length, with the results no longer in doubt, Lochte eased up a bit. Lochte's time was 4:07.06, Phelps' was 4:07.89 and Clary's 4.09.92. Lochte and Phelps are on the team; Clary has to hope that Phelps pulls out.

Tue, 26 Jun 2012 12:27:19 +0000 Donal comment 158003 at http://dagblog.com
