I have read that there were several concerns with those drag-reducing suits. First, they were expensive, so a less affluent swimmer's parents could not afford them. Second, after one or two races, they loosened, became less form-fitting, and developed folds and creases that actually slowed swimmers down. So in addition to being expensive, they had a very short useful life. Third, they enhanced the underwater dolphin swimming — which elite swimmers do immediately after starts and turns — more than the actual Back or Fly or Crawl stroking.
