After 40 years of driving monster gas hogs, my mom finally got arthritis so she could justify 40 years+ of driving monster gas hogs.

Theoretically the gas savings in the first 40 years could have paid for her larger senior car, the one with the recliner seat and foot rest and built-in infusion drip and the special horn that blares "get out of my way, you damn whippersnappers".

I worked a bit on vehicles like these in the 90's, and really came to like them. Both for gated communities, but also for people who drive primarily in denser urban areas. Where they'd be even better, I think, is as quick urban rental vehicles - sort of jump in and drive. As we get more of them around in cities, the culture of car-buying changes, and people will move down in size. But most North Americans are still happy to spend thousands of dollars more on larger vehicles because they MIGHT want it to go on some long haul, or haul heavy stuff. There are signs younger people "get" that they can rent for those rarer purposes, and so that's hopeful.

The thing I've always wondered about these kinds of cars is, what happens as the owner ages, develops arthritis and loses the ability to easily squeeze themselves into such a small car?

Is there going to be a whole new comedy category set up on You-tube called, "Old folks trying to get into their MyCars?"

Or will the cars only be allowed to be sold to people 18-45?

I suppose there could develop a whole other market for people wanting to trade in their MyCars for a roomier, senior-friendly sedan.
