As causation, I'd call it a stretch. But, in pretty much all cases, the killer believes they are justified. Whether or not the society of the time agrees is another matter entirely. I'd say that the end of the Odyssey is an expression of this darker angel in the human psyche, in a way that he society at the time condoned.

The fundamental ill you don't mention, is that too many Americans do not care about, or want to do a damn thing (except buy more guns) to prevent the next one of these mass murders, an event that will happen again as surely as the sun rising tomorrow.

To say acts of actual random mass murder have some connection with Homer seems a stretch, the Odyssey was meant to instill that population with the ethics of the time, the murders had a very definite message of just retribution, and the tale was as fictional as Batman.
