Hats off to him -

1) Beautiful almost impromptu statement on landing - all-inclusive, every kid in the world could hear it and it was meant for him/her (okay, "mankind" is a bit exclusive)

2) Bouncing around on the moon - wheeee!!! space is fun!!! - the spirit of science fiction writers and the kid inside, not a military project on steroids

3) Quitting a desk job to go to academia - enjoying yourself & feeling comfortable better than climbing the ladder - no need to revel in fame

Would be nice to know where people were at the landing.

An American who will be remembered by humanity long after the likes of George W. Bush are forgotten. Oh, George W. is already forgotten, even by God's Own Party....who put the imbecile and war criminal in office, and then cheered his re-election.

Armstrong lived in the 'ask not what your country can do for you' era, not the 'my sons serve the nation by working on my campaign' Romney era. A bygone era when the rich paid higher taxes, and even Republicans were not always clutching at their wallets (or writing laws about blastocysts and zygotes) and when JFK promised to put a man, Neil Armstrong as it turned out, on the moon we did it.
