The only thing I can think of is that because "<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Recapitulation_theory">ontogeny recapitulates phylogeny</a>", and since phylogeny is from evolutionary theory, they feel they must also deny (the very observable) ontogeny. (Human embryos have gills? Unpossible!) Wow!
