Speaking for a JSmith who is unlikely to return, right wing extremists don't like government funding of PBS because they only support government funding of wars, legal or illegal, and government contracts/funding where Republicans, or the Republican Party, gets a kickback. They operate, in essence, in similar fashion to an organized crime syndicate.

The GOP particularly doesn't like government funding that, as Dr. C says, gives stuff away, be it food for the starving, health care for the poor, or education for kids who may benefit from it. SpongeBob pays its own way, but is also hated, because they think it teaches 'tolerance', a civilizing principle that is repugnant to the intolerant.

I think the biggest difference between public television and private is the commercialism. I suppose its obvious to say that.. but think of the influence. The children's programs on commercial television aren't about educating children. Its about selling Frooty Loopy cereal and action figures/toys. How many cartoons were made based on toys already on the maket??? Barbie movies, Transformer cartoons, I could go on... All to bolster sales. But public television doesn't need to sell anything except quality programming that is good enough for people to whip out their wallets and donate. Commercial tv can never keep up with that.

Sound argument, yet why did the Mittwitt pick Big Bird to Seamus to oblivion? He didn't pick Cookie Monster, Bert or Ernie to fire, why?

It's a known fact that, since returning from their polygamist haven south of the border, there has never been a single Romney who has ever worn the uniform of the nation they claim to love so much. Although Mitt demonstrated in support of the Vietnam War, he got enough deferments that he avoided putting his own entitled ass at risk in it. And not one of Mitt's five sons has ever signed up for the military or served in uniform. Mitt says that's OK, his sons working to get him elected is just the same thing. Tell that to the families of the thousands who were sent to early graves by George W. Bush and his Republican administration.

I believe Mitt picked Big Bird because big yellow feathered creatures remind him of himself.

Romney is the biggest inbred, ignorant, dickless, worm-headed, heartless, beady eyed, yellow bellied candy ass war supporting sack of monkey shit chickenhawk in the country. He and his kin have a yellow streak just as long, and just as wide, as the Big Bird.

Well, JS, I'm going to leave patent dishonesty alone, since it seems to be your thing.

1) As moat says, 3 seconds with teh google can find you scads of conservatives denouncing PBS. If I am "patently dishonest" for mentioning a fact that is in wide evidence, then your standard of "honesty" is "not mentioning things JSmith would prefer were not true." I decline to recognize such a standard.

2) Without government funding, many of the smaller stations in poorer areas will have to close operations. This is also well known.

3) Other networks very obviously do not manage to produce high-quality educational TV for children, which was the point of my post. So by "doing just fine" I take you to mean "have proved thoroughly unable to do what PBS does."
