2. But whatever one’s objections to Hagel, one wonders what he has done to deserve the vile and venomous campaign of vilification that he has been subjected to in the past few days. From a widely respected former senator from Nebraska, known for his integrity and non-conformism, he has been turned virtually overnight into an inept, sadistic, gay-bashing anti-Israel appeaser who reeks of anti-Semitism. Unfortunately, some mainstream Jewish leaders have been dragged into this mud as well.

Of course, once you have smeared Hagel you must discredit his backers as well. Small wonder then that within a few hours of the publication of a letter of support signed by 9 former U.S. ambassadors – including four who served in Israel – Commentary magazine was ready with an exhaustive list detailing the pro-Arab and anti-Israeli credentials of the former diplomats. And if anyone deigns to defend them – well, you know the drill by now.

Most of what I know about Hagel is what I have learned since his name emerged as a likely Sec. of Defense. Based on that, I think I would rather see him as Secretary of State. Nominating Kerry for that post seems somewhere between dumb and dumber.
