Mother of gun-toting tot at Queens school faces charges

[....] Deborah Farley, 53, brought her son Tyler to Wave Preparatory Elementary School in Far Rockaway just after 7:30 a.m. yesterday. When she returned to her home, someone in the house told her that the second grader may have taken the gun to school with him and that it might be stashed in his backpack, sources said. [....]

Law enforcement sources said Farley quickly rushed back to the school on Briar Place, telling school officials that she needed to take him for an appointment at the dentist. According to the NYPD, Farley alerted the principal after she did not immediately locate the weapon in her son’s backpack. [....]

School Safety Agents searched the boy’s backpack and found a .22 caliber Phoenix Arms handgun, a magazine loaded with 10 rounds of ammunition, a flare pistol, and a plastic bag containing at least seven more bullets, police said.

Police said they believe that one of the mother’s two adult sons told her that the gun was in the youngster’s book bag, but police did not say who placed the weapon in the knapsack. [....]Police are now seeking to obtain a search warrant to look through the family’s home. Authorities said no licensed gun owners live at that address.

Farley was arrested on multiple criminal counts late Thursday night and will be arraigned at Queens Criminal Court on Friday. She has been charged with criminal possession of a weapon, criminal possession of a weapon on school grounds, unlawful possession of a weapon and endangering the welfare of a child, the NYPD said. Attorney information for Farley was not immediately available.
