I don't chime in very often because my chimes only work in the wind. My mind mostly travels through horse latitudes with the sails draping over the rigging like curtains in a Dickens' novel.

Your reference to Nietzsche stirs me to at least challenge one element of the linked Wikipedia entry. The bit you quoted is not a word for word quote of the article but a melange of different parts found therein. But your mix fairly represents a common error made regarding his ideas:

“Every belief, every considering something true, is necessarily false because there is simply no true world.” For Nietzsche, there is no objective order or structure in the world except what we give it."

The second sentence ignores the efforts made by Nietzsche to oppose the denial of nature that he listed as a central motive in Pauline Christianity. Unlike Kant, Nietzsche was saying that life has order and structure that we have been trained not to gaze upon. In the Kantian version of a world made by our intellect, the unexamined becomes the "true" because it is untouched by actual experience. From the Nietzsche point of view, that outcome is a self fulfilling prophecy. The "history of philosophy" quality of the wiki article does not give proper regard to what it means to be at war with an idea.

In keeping with the thought of a war on ideas, I wonder at the absolute quality of your saying:

"I do think that McDonnell and Boehner and McCain and Cantor and a host of others are responsible for all of this."

They have played their parts, assigned by their masters. But the critical element has always been the audience that the show captivates.

If they are the problem, we are the problem too.

Sat, 09 Feb 2013 23:41:41 +0000 moat comment 174494 at http://dagblog.com Sounds interesting; I will http://dagblog.com/comment/174479#comment-174479
In reply to http://www.youtube.com/watch?

Sounds interesting; I will check it out but I think I did see this listed on Netflix.

How those English survived is beyond me!

Sat, 09 Feb 2013 14:20:36 +0000 Richard Day comment 174479 at http://dagblog.com http://www.youtube.com/watch? http://dagblog.com/comment/174472#comment-174472
In reply to I guess I will jump in and

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G8vaexIRSZ0

You can find it on youtube. This is the first show in the series. Enjoy.

Sat, 09 Feb 2013 08:47:10 +0000 trkingmomoe comment 174472 at http://dagblog.com I guess I will jump in and http://dagblog.com/comment/174471#comment-174471
In reply to NIHILISM & FAMILY FEUD

I guess I will jump in and say" yes, there is a glut of morons in the GOP. "

You left out my favorite dummy...Gov. Skeletor. He thinks he will be able to throw millions into Florida and build a grass roots effort like the democrats. He made that announcement the other day. It took a decade to build up and organize the progressives here in Florida.

I found some BBC programs on the internet that I have been watching. Wartime Farm might interest you. It is about how England struggled to feed themselves during WWII. It is really interesting about what they ate and how they prepared it. You might find it on netflix.

Sat, 09 Feb 2013 08:37:02 +0000 trkingmomoe comment 174471 at http://dagblog.com
