A huge change in the way mentally ill are approached by authorities would lead to less people owning guns - because the unhinged tend to buy more firearms. The approach to mental health right now makes mental health treatment a personal choice - with all the commercial psych meds I've written about being a good example - and the patients are basically able to do things like go out and own firearms, etc.

If you want to reform this issue, it'll mean alot of government intervention. Alot less money will be made. Nothing in America happens unless someone is profiting from it and psyched out people shooting each other happened because it benefited more than a few.

Fri, 15 Mar 2013 17:02:53 +0000 Orion comment 175751 at http://dagblog.com [....] Her son, David http://dagblog.com/comment/175726#comment-175726
In reply to Mother faces firearms charges in Pa. bar shooting (by mentally ill son)

[....] Her son, David Mazzocco, 25, of Imperial, who is not permitted to have guns because of his history of mental health problems [....]

According to the criminal complaint:

Mazzocco is forbidden from having a gun because of a 2006 involuntary psychiatric commitment after he flew into a drunken rage at his family's home and started flicking lighted cigarettes at two gas cans covered with straw.
