They're saying adult consciousness traits start earlier than they thought with babies but that is predicated on a strong belief that they do not have those traits before that, which not only means before birth but for several months after birth.

The findings hint at an early shift from a largely passive biological process shared with other animals to the uniquely human ability to ponder ourselves and our surroundings in complex and abstract ways.

That basically says that before this "early shift" happens, babies have little difference from animals. I think PETA might find more useful arguments here than anti-abortion folks. I.E., the youngest infants and animals are very alike, why do we protect the lives of them and not the others?

Tue, 23 Apr 2013 19:31:23 +0000 artappraiser comment 177143 at http://dagblog.com When I first read this, the http://dagblog.com/comment/177114#comment-177114
In reply to Huh? Since I don't know many abortions taking place at 5 months postpartum, and the study could support arguments that fetuses have not reached full human potential, I guess one could say it's gives a point to the side of pro-choice. Which I happen to be on the side of, too. So no, the thought doesn't piss me off. On the other hand, I think I'd caution pro-choice people not to risk using it. Nobody likes puppy killers much, and puppies aren't fully developed dogs. More seriously, I really don't see this solving either side's "issues."

Tue, 23 Apr 2013 03:50:38 +0000 artappraiser comment 177109 at http://dagblog.com I know this comment is really http://dagblog.com/comment/177107#comment-177107
In reply to Adult consciousness may be present in infants' minds, study says

I know this comment is really going to piss you off, artappraiser, but doesn't that have a good deal of impact on the abortion debate?

Tue, 23 Apr 2013 03:36:07 +0000 Orion comment 177107 at http://dagblog.com
