I have also read very little of Yglesias, so I don't know how representative his recent Slate column is. I do know that in the future I will be much more likely to go looking for Deboer's latest than Yglesias'.

Now, I've been blogging for half a decade, and I've interacted with a lot of people online, and had many perfectly lovely conversations with some of them. Yet I maintain a profound lack of understanding and an inability to predict how people will react. Try as I might, I can't comprehend the human mind that says, "you know, Matt Yglesias justified the conditions that killed hundreds of people through explicit reference to their national difference. But the guys at Mr. Destructo were mean to an affluent, connected guy who lives a life of ease in the halls of power in Washington DC. That's the real crime."

http://lhote.blogspot.com/2013/04/bad-behavior.html

Ditto regards future reading of Et Tu, Mr. Destructo?, at least for a while.

http://www.mrdestructo.com/search/label/Destructo%20Salon

Mon, 29 Apr 2013 00:13:35 +0000 A Guy Called LULU comment 177325 at http://dagblog.com The horror that created this http://dagblog.com/comment/177311#comment-177311
In reply to I haven't read this entire

The horror that created this tremendously sad expression of a better side of humanity can focus the mind on humanity's worse side. The ease of which human suffering and life itself is ignored is proportional to the distance from the victim whether that be a physical or emotional or class distance. Our, and other's, focus on profit maximization regardless the economic system makes this outcome inevitable. Richard Eskow writes well on that fact and does so starting with a criticism, a very valid one IMO, of a piece by an old TPM favorite, Matt Yglesias. Eskow points out how, when you quantify the value of a human life and include that monetary value in your calculus of their treatment and their access to your empathy, all life is cheapened.

http://www.smirkingchimp.com/thread/richard-eskow/49284/when-you-cheapen...

Sun, 28 Apr 2013 17:44:22 +0000 A Guy Called LULU comment 177311 at http://dagblog.com I haven't read this entire http://dagblog.com/comment/177273#comment-177273
In reply to The Terror of Capitalism

I haven't read this entire article. I saw the picture and stopped. I considered changing the title because my posting the link is all about that picture. The picture says, I think, so much that is so beyond the particulars of what caused violent death in this particular instance. It could have been an earthquake, more likely, it could have been a bomb.

The picture is a powerful, beautiful, portrait.

Sat, 27 Apr 2013 00:04:39 +0000 A Guy Called LULU comment 177273 at http://dagblog.com
