YouGov poll shows rise in proportion of people who believe British Muslims pose a threat to democracy

Nearly two-thirds of people believe there will be a 'clash of civilisations' between British Muslims and white Britons in the wake of the murder of a British soldier in Woolwich, a new poll shows.

The number of those who believe such a clash is inevitable has increased by 9% from last year.

There has also been a small increase in the proportion of people who believe British Muslims pose a serious threat to democracy, up to 34% on Thursday and Friday from 30% in November 2012, according to the YouGov survey of 1,839 adults.

The poll will fuel concern of an explosion of race hate, with one interfaith charity reporting a huge increase in anti-Muslim incidents since the murder of soldier Lee Rigby in south-east London on Wednesday.

Faith Matters, which runs a helpline, said they had received 162 calls since the attack, up from a daily average of six. [.....]

On Saturday two men, aged 24 and 28, were detained at an address in south-east London, and a 21-year-old man was arrested in the street in Charlton Lane, Greenwich, all on suspicion of conspiracy to commit murder. (Reuters) - One of two men arrested over the murder of a British soldier in a London street was detained in Kenya in 2010 on suspicion of seeking to train with an al Qaeda-linked group in Somalia, Kenyan police said on Sunday.

Confirmation that Michael Adebolajo was held in Kenya and deported to London will intensify calls for Britain's spy agencies to explain what they knew about the suspect and whether they could have done more to prevent Lee Rigby's killing on Wednesday.

The British parliament's security committee will next week investigate the security services' actions in the run-up to a killing that has put pressure on Prime Minister David Cameron to take a harder line on radicals.

The Nairobi government initially said Adebolajo had never visited Kenya. But on Sunday, Boniface Mwaniki, head of Kenya's anti-terrorism police, said Adebolajo was arrested in November 2010 and deported to Britain.

"He was arrested with a group of five others trying to travel to Somalia to join militant group al Shabaab," he told Reuters [.....]

British Mother Confronted Hostile Hacking Suspects

Anyone looking for a sign of British bravery in the face of terror should look no further than Ingrid Loyau-Kennett.

A British soldier had been hacked to death on the streets of southeast London Wednesday afternoon. His alleged killers carried butcher knives dripping with blood, stalking the scene, police nowhere in sight.

Loyau-Kennett's bus had just stopped in front of the killing. Some people might have shielded their eyes and fled. Instead, the mother of two and Cub Scout leader got off the bus and walked straight for the man whose hands were stained a deep red. He carried weapons. She carried only resolve.

"I just talked to him. He looked like a normal guy. He wasn't high, he wasn't on drugs. A normal guy pissed off with the fact, [as he said], 'Muslim women and children are dying in their countries by the hand of white men,'" she told Daybreak, a morning news program on the British channel ITV. "He was very, very close to me. He was almost touching me... I asked him, what's the point. [He said] 'war in London.'" [.....]

4. Last, and strangest, is the woman with the shopping cart. As the speaker delivers his peroration, a middle-aged woman approaches from behind, pulling her cart, passing him, and carrying on by. She either does not notice what is happening, or prefers not to, or pretends not to, and who can blame her? We cling to the dictum voiced by W. H. Auden, that suffering “takes place / While someone else is eating or opening a window or just walking dully along.” But modern outbursts of violence, compounded with the modern means of capturing and publicizing them, may compel us to revise, or intensify, that observation. What Auden was pointing to, in his poem about Bruegel’s “Fall of Icarus,” were the lives that unfold, mild and oblivious, away from the scene of death or destruction: the ship that sails on, say, in Bruegel’s painting, while the boy with melted wings drops out of the sky. But what if life itself becomes an intrinsic part of the scene; what if someone else walks dully along, a foot or two away, just as death is lying there, and as the bringer of death is still crying his wares, and explaining what he sought to achieve? That is utterly disorientating, in its clamping together of barbarism and urban normality, of cloudy British weather and startlingly bright blood; and it may begin to account for the effect—bewilderment, shaken together with disgust and disbelief—that this footage is liable to have on those who see it. As we learn more, in the ensuing hours and days, of what occurred just before the cameras were switched on, that effect is unlikely to subside.
