In any case, it's pretty hard for me to cut Rummy a break. Can't remember the exact quote or timing, but my sense is that it was a way of excusing the aftermath of toppling a MidEast dictator without a follow-on plan. He didn't imo say, "...there were failure modes that didn't occur to anyone".,which is clear language, because his aim was obfuscation, not clarification.

The country seems to be suffering war fatigue right now. That fact isn't going to change no matter how much the neocons bluster around. As long as there is a sequester here at home, the country will not go along with increased spending on war. Can we do it smartley? There's a lot of things about Rumsfeld not to like, but his discussion of the unknown unknowns isn't one of them, in my opinion. I work with safety-critical systems, and one of the hardest tasks is to try to determine what are all the possible ways that the systems can fail. You always need to assume that there are failure modes that have not occurred to anyone.

As I said on another thread, as soon as the news goes round the world that the first US bomb has fallen on Syria, every subsequent civilian casualty, every new refugee, every atrocity, every tale of woe, and every day that this war goes on will be blamed on America.

We will own this conflict, and will be expected to resolve it. On our own. To bring it to an end a civil war/proxy war, in a way that no one can even imagine, with a plan we do not possess.

The bombs may be smart, but we aren't if we dip even our little toe into this bloodbath. If Obama's doing this to show he has 'backbone' I say we already know he doesn't on issues where it counts, here at home. Maybe his 'capital' will be expended to the extent that his pending nomination of Larry Summers to the Fed goes down the tubes too.
