I'm obviously not a Catholic, nor even a Christian, but I've always had respect for Jesus' message of love, forgiveness, and compassion. Jesus was very clear on what he thought were the two most important rules: Love God with everything you've got, and love your neighbor as yourself. I feel like this Pope is trying to remind the Catholic (and Christian) world of that. (And no, not all Christians need reminding of it.)

Fascinating. We see a man who, at 76, is setting off -- or perhaps re-embarking -- on a voyage of self-discovery. With more than a billion co-religionists in tow. So far, the reactionary forces within the church are no match for his obvious spiritual sincerity. Godspeed, Francis.

Pope Francis said the Catholic Church had become obsessed by "small-minded rules" about how to be faithful and that pastors should instead emphasize compassion over condemnation when discussing divisive social issues of abortion, gays and contraception.

The pope's remarkably blunt message six months into his papacy was sure to reverberate in the U.S. and around the globe as bishops who have focused much of their preaching on such hot-button issues are asked to act more as pastors of wounded souls.

And they back it up, that this has not come out of thin air and is not just vague talk but has gone out as a sermon, as instructions, to his priesthood:

In interviews published Thursday in Jesuit journals in 16 countries, Francis said he had been "reprimanded" for not pressing church opposition to abortion in his papacy. But he said "it is not necessary to talk about these issues all the time."

"The church's pastoral ministry cannot be obsessed with the transmission of a disjointed multitude of doctrines to be imposed insistently," Francis said.

"We have to find a new balance; otherwise even the moral edifice of the church is likely to fall like a house of cards, losing the freshness and fragrance of the Gospel," the pope said in the 12,000-word article, based on interviews conducted by a fellow Jesuit, the Rev. Antonio Spadaro, editor of La Civilta Cattolica, a Rome journal for the religious order.

I believe it, he's after big change. Is he going to be tough on the troglodytes? That is the question, as he's into kindliness and tolerance to all, maybe even to troglodytes. I will suggest though, as a product of parochial schools, that guilt can be used as a ruthless weapon in these kinds of situations.

Does this mean Bishops can no longer donate Parish funds to defeat gay marriage legislation in any state election anywhere in the nation? ....And they thought they were on a mission from God.....Yes they are obsessed, would like to see that word of the Pope on the bulletin boards next to the reams of abortion propaganda.
