Dr Paul Offit of the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) has a good book on the rejection of science in modern culture, "Do You Believe In Magic?" It details how enthusiastic pop -culture ands can capture center stage and propose crazy things. They become the gurus.

The book also notes the mega- vitamin craze of Linus Pauling, the anti- vaccine folks and the ability of Orin Hatch and Dan Burton, among others to prevent the FDA for even checking that formulations of items like glucosamine remain equal from batch to batch.

You are very welcome AA. It concerns me when uneducated folks post their beliefs as facts. Dag has been much like huffpo in allowing misinformation and propaganda to be published on this particular subject. Finally an excellent article helps refute those unfounded claims.

Edit to add, I very much appreciate what the author has to say, this very well-said phrase in particular: all the big American lies: self-reliance, the goodness of Nature, Calvinist smugness, and boastfulness in a big stinking stew.
